Jazz have been competitive against the spread
Utah (2-3 SU, 4-1 ATS, and 3-2 O/U) lost 118-96 to Phoenix on Friday in NBA Cup action. The Jazz shot 37 percent from the field, including 32 percent from long range, and conceded 29 points off their 21 turnovers. The Suns led by as many as 25 points and never trailed by more than one point.

The Jazz went 17-46 last season, finishing 15th in the Western Conference and failing to make the postseason field for the third straight season. It has been a disappointing stretch for fans, as the franchise appeared to be on the come-up just a few years ago with Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert leading the team. Utah had three 50-plus win seasons from 2016 to 2021, but never advanced further than the conference semis. The stars from that team are elsewhere, replaced with new homegrown players tasked with rebuilding in the loaded West.
While they're unlikely to be much more competitive this season, the Jazz feature several new faces. Jordan Clarkson (waived), John Collins (trade), and Collin Sexton (trade) are gone, and Jusuf NurkiΔ (trade), Kyle Anderson (trade), Kevin Love (trade), and Georges Niang (trade) are in. The new veterans will support the core, which is headlined by All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen, who averaged 19.0 points and 5.9 rebounds in 47 games last season. The rest of the group is young, but talented, featuring nine former first-round draft picks. The most recent of that bunch is Rutgers forward Ace Bailey (fifth overall pick), a consensus top-five recruit in the 2024 high school class.
Utah Jazz Basketball Injury Report: Niang (foot) and PG Isaiah Collier (hamstring) are day-to-day.
Hornets lead NBA in scoring this season
Charlotte (2-3 SU, 3-2 ATS, and 4-1 O/U) lost 123-107 to Orlando on Thursday and played Minnesota on Saturday after this article was published. PG LaMelo Ball paces the Hornets in scoring, averaging 24.4 points per game with 10.2 assists and 8.0 rebounds. Charlotte averages a league-leading 128.3 points per game on 49.5 percent shooting (7th), including 40.3 percent from three-point range (5th). The Hornets' defense has been soft, allowing 124.8 points per game (28th) on 48.6 percent shooting (23rd), including 39.8 percent from beyond the arc (28th).
Charlotte went 19-63 last season, finishing 14th in the East and missing the playoffs for the ninth straight season. Injuries stung the Hornets, as Ball and Brandon Miller missed a lot of playing time, leaving Miles Bridges (20.3 PPG in 64 games) as the team's leading scorer. While their win total has dropped in four straight years, the team's young core is generating buzz. Can they build momentum under second-year coach Charles Lee to make a move up the standings?
The Hornets made several intriguing moves in the offseason, picking Duke sharp-shooting freshman Kon Knueppel with the fourth pick in the draft and adding late first/early second-round talent in UConn forward Liam McNeeley, Duke guard Sion James, and Creighton center Ryan Kalkbrenner. The front office also traded for former first-round pick Collin Sexton and brought in veterans Pat Connaughton, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Mason Plumlee to support their young core.
Charlotte Hornets Basketball Injury Report:Β Miller (shoulder) and PF Grant Williams (ACL) are out, and Ball (ankle) is day-to-day.
Jazz vs. Hornets Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Jazz vs. Hornets
- Jazz ML (5 Units)
I lean towards Utah's side in Sunday's game vs Charlotte. The Jazz will make the Hornets work their buckets inside the arc, as they allow the lowest percentage of opponent shot attempts at the rim. Charlotte has been average at the rim and ranks 20th in mid-range shooting percentage, relying on the three-ball to score a lot of points. That isn't a sound strategy, especially for a team that struggles with turnovers (23rd in TO%). The Jazz may not be an offensive juggernaut, but they're allowing the fewest points in the NBA (96.6 PPG). They'll be locked in defensively and better rested than the home team (playing a back-to-back). I feel confident they'll get to the foul line and hit enough shots against the weak Charlotte defense to win straight-up.
Over/Under Pick for Jazz vs. Hornets
- Under (4 Units)
Charlotte has been a high-scoring squad, but I question how efficient they will be on Sunday, as Utah ranks tenth in opponent true shooting percentage and will be rested. In the back end of a back-to-back, they will be challenged by a formidable Jazz defense that will battle with them in the paint. It's early in the season, but tired legs could also affect their accuracy from three-point range. The Jazz couldn't score 100 points in their previous game and rank 28th in offensive rating this season. They are bottom-ten in both rim shooting percentage and three-point percentage, and they have the highest turnover percentage in the NBA. With that said, I lean towards the under in Sunday's East-West clash in Buzz City.
