Kings' veteran-led squad has not gelled

Sacramento (3-9 SU, 4-7-1 ATS, and 8-4 O/U) lost 133-100 to Atlanta on Wednesday, its fourth straight defeat. The Kings have scored less than 110 points in three of their last four games, only crossing the 110-point mark in their lopsided loss to the T-Wolves. They shot just 39.1 percent in their home loss to the Hawks, a game they never led and trailed by as many as 44 points. Atlanta led by only three after the first quarter, but outscored the home team 29-12 in the second quarter.

SG Zach LaVine paces the Kings in scoring, averaging 23.9 points on 51.9 percent shooting. The 30-year-old also averages 3.4 rebounds per game and shoots 42.3 percent from three-point distance. A few other Sacramento players to watch on Friday against the Timberwolves are G DeMar DeRozan (19.2 PPG and 3.3 APG), F Domantas Sabonis (15.3 PPG and 12.3 RPG), G Russell Westbrook (14.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 5.8 APG), and G Malik Monk (14.2 PPG).

The Kings score 113.5 points per game (22nd) on 46.9 percent shooting (17th), including 37.3 percent from three-point range (11th). The Sacramento defense allows 124.5 points per game (28th) on 51.0 percent shooting (29th), including 37.0 percent from beyond the arc (23rd). They are 23rd in NET rating, including 21st in offensive rating and 26th in defensive rating, per Dunks and Threes.

Sacramento Kings Basketball Injury Report: Monk (ankle) is questionable to play in Friday's NBA Cup game against the Timberwolves.

Anthony Edwards' return has sparked Minnesota

Minnesota (7-4 SU, 4-7 ATS, and 8-3 O/U) defeated Utah 120-113 on Monday. The T-Wolves have won three straight and five of their last six games, the only loss coming on the road vs New York. In their latest win, they rode Anthony Edwards' hot hand (35 points) and outscored the Jazz 54-36 in the paint. Utah shot 40 percent from the floor and committed 15 costly turnovers.

Edwards leads the Timberwolves in scoring, averaging 27.1 points per game on 50.4 percent shooting. He also averages 4.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. A few other Minnesota players to watch on Friday against the Kings are F Julius Randle (25.4 PPG, 7.2 RPG, and 6.2 APG), F Jaden McDaniels (18.4 PPG and 4.6 RPG), G Donte DiVincenzo (13.8 PPG and 3.6 APG), and C Rudy Gobert (10.9 PPG and 10.1 RPG).

The Timberwolves score 121.2 points per game (6th) on 50.5 percent shooting (2nd), including 40.6 percent from three-point range (2nd). Spread Pick for Kings vs. Timberwolves

  • Sacramento +11 (4 Units)

The Kings will get LaVine back for Friday's game after their leading scorer sat out the second game of Wednesday's back-to-back. The sharpshooting vet will help boost the visitors' offensive attack, as he and DeRozan are reliable perimeter scorers capable of attacking Minnesota's weak mid-range defense (28th in opponent mid-range%). I also expect the Kings to grab enough offensive rebounds to generate necessary second-chance scoring opportunities (Timberwolves rank 26th in opponent offensive rebounding rate).

Neither team has been a good bet against the spread this season. That said, I don't want to back Minnesota ATS against a Sacramento team it just played a few days ago. This time, the Kings will put up more of a fight, making up ground in the NBA Cup Group A standings.

Over/Under Pick for Kings vs. Timberwolves

  • Over 240 (5 Units)

Kings vs. Timberwolves Betting Trend: The over is 8-2 in the last ten matchups between Sacramento and Minnesota.

The high-tempo Kings (8th in pace) have struggled offensively, but that hasn't prevented the over from cashing in three of their last four games. I believe they'll have a better game plan for tomorrow's rematch with the T-Wolves, who can be exploited on the perimeter and on the glass. Minnesota has also turned it up a couple of notches since Edwards' return from a hamstring injury, averaging 128.8 points per game. The home team isn't short on offensive weapons, but Ant's presence elevates this group to another level. Defense has been a major issue in Sacramento this season, as its veteran stars — LaVine, DeRozan, Monk, and Westbrook — aren't giving a lot of effort on that end of the court.
