Knicks look like one of the East's top contenders
New York (2-0 SU, 2-0 ATS, and 1-1 O/U) defeated Boston 105-95 on Friday night. The Knicks beat Cleveland 119-111 in their season opener.
NY handled its business against an injury-riddled Celtics team, as PG Jalen Brunson scored 31 points and F Karl-Anthony Towns had 26 points and 13 rebounds. The Knicks stomped the visitors in the second quarter, outscoring them 42-14 to take a 20-point lead into halftime. Sloppy play allowed Boston to get back into the game in the third, but New York finished strong to win and cover the spread. The home team dominated on the glass (+16 rebounding margin with 21 offensive rebounds), outscored the Celtics 15-2 in fast break points, and shot 22-for-25 (88.0%) at the free-throw line.
It was a similar story on Wednesday, as the Knicks stormed out to a 17-point first-half lead, only to allow the visiting Cavaliers back in the game. Cleveland outscored New York 37-22 in the third quarter, but the Knicks didn't surrender, finishing strong in the fourth. The home team got the foul line often (31-for-35 FT shooting), won the rebounding battle 48-32, and outscored Cleveland 42-30 in the paint.
New York should be one of the league's top teams again this season. The Knicks went 51-31 in 2024-25, finishing third in the East's regular season standings and advancing to the EC Finals. The Clutch Player of the Year, Brunson, averaged 26.0 points and 7.3 dimes, and Towns earned his fifth All-Star selection, but New York played team basketball, with OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges, and Josh Hart also performing at a high level. The Knicks' core is hungry for an NBA Championship, and they appear well-positioned to make another deep run in the postseason.
New York Knicks Basketball Injury Report: C Mitchell Robinson (ankle) is day-to-day. C Karl-Anthony Towns (quad) is questionable.
Miami was dominant on Friday
Miami (1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS, and 2-0 O/U) beat Memphis 146-114 on Friday, bouncing back from a 125-121 loss to Orlando in its season opener.
The Heat destroyed the Grizzlies, shooting 53.9 percent from the field, including 19-for-40 (47.5%) from three-point range. They dominated on the glass (+16 rebounding margin) and in the paint (72 points). Miami led by as many as 45 points, as eight players scored in double figures. Memphis fell behind early and never recovered, as the Grizz were outscored 86-47 in the first half. Center Bam Adebayo led the Heat with 24 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
It was a solid response from a Miami team that lost a close game to the Magic on Wednesday. The Heat led by seven points midway through the fourth quarter, but couldn't hit a field goal for four minutes, allowing the home team to escape with the win. Guard Norman Powell led Miami with 28 points, and Adebayo added 15 points and 12 rebounds. It was a battle inside, as neither team had a significant rebounding advantage or scoring edge in the paint.
The Heat went 37-45 last season, finishing tenth in the Eastern Conference. It was the team's first sub-.500 performance since 2018-19, but that didn't stop Miami from making the playoffs, as they won eight of their last 12 games to secure a spot in the Play-In Tournament. They took a step further, too, becoming the first ten-seed to advance with consecutive road wins over Chicago and Atlanta. Will they find a way to make a deeper run this season? Miami doesn't have an elite roster, but with Powell, Adebayo, Tyler Herro, and Andrew Wiggins, they have veteran experience, while Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Davion Mitchell bring youthful upside.
Miami Heat Basketball Injury Report: SG Kasparas Jakucionis (groin) is day-to-day, and SG Tyler Herro (ankle) is out for the next 8-12 weeks. G Terry Rozier (leave) is out indefinitely.
Knicks vs. Heat Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Knicks vs. Heat
- Knicks cover (4 Units)
Could this be the Knicks' year? Indiana will be without Tyrese Haliburton, and Boston is missing Jayson Tatum. Cleveland was a dominant regular-season team, but wilted under pressure in the playoffs. I would put New York up there with any team in the East right now. Miami feels like a fringe playoff team again. They got a fine return for Jimmy Butler, but they're not a better team without him.
The Knicks have beaten the Cavs and Celtics, dominating for large portions of those games. They played with their food a little, but I'm willing to overlook that. The Heat will give them a good battle, but they're a couple of notches below their opponents in the talent department. New York hasn't allowed its opponents to take a lot of shots at the rim (third-lowest opponent shot attempt percentage), and has been solid defensively inside the arc (8th in opponent 2PT%). The Knicks also lead the NBA in opponent offensive rebounding percentage and opponent free-throw rate. Miami can shoot the three-ball, but if they're too reliant on that shot, the Knicks will pull away for a comfortable win.
Over/Under Pick for Knicks vs. Heat
- Over (5 Units)
The Heat lead the NBA in pace through two games, averaging 112.5 possessions per 48 minutes. Miami is averaging 12.0 seconds per offensive possession, also 1st in the league. They also rank 7th in shooting percentage, including third in three-point percentage. New York has made it tough for its opponents at the rim, but has allowed the most three-point attempts in the league. I don't expect a shootout, but these teams will trade buckets for most of the game. New York will force its way to the charity stripe, and it hits the offensive boards hard (3rd in OR%).
