Knicks are 2-2 in their previous four games
New York (9-5 SU, 8-6 ATS, and 9-5 O/U) beat Dallas 113-111 on Wednesday. NY is 7-3 SU (6-4 ATS) in its last ten games, and the over was 7-3.
New York held off Dallas on the road in its previous game, as Landry Shamet scored a pair of threes in the final 1:02 and drew a charge call to seal the win. Jalen Brunson led the Knicks in scoring (28 points) in his return from a two-game absence (ankle sprain). NY outscored Dallas 44-30 in the paint, but kept the home team in the game by missing 16 of their 35 free throws. The Knicks score 120.9 points per game (6th) on 45.8 percent shooting (20th), while their opponents average 115.0 points (12th) on 47.0 percent shooting (19th).
Brunson paces New York in scoring, averaging 28.0 points on 46.8 percent shooting. He also adds 6.4 dimes per game. A few other Knicks to watch against the Magic are Karl-Anthony Towns (21.5 PPG and 12.8 RPG), Mikal Bridges (16.1 PPG and 4.9 APG), and Josh Hart (9.7 PPG, 6.8 RPG, and 4.7 APG).
New York projects to be one of the league's top teams again this season. The Knicks went 51-31 in 2024-25, finishing third in the East's regular season standings and advancing to the EC Finals. The Clutch Player of the Year, Brunson, averaged 26.0 points and 7.3 assists, and Towns earned his fifth All-Star selection, but New York played team basketball, with OG Anunoby, Bridges, and Hart also performing at a high level. The Knicks' core is hungry for an NBA Championship, and they appear well-positioned to make another deep run in the postseason.
New York Knicks Basketball Injury Report:
- Anunoby (15.8 PPG and 5.6 RPG) is out with a hamstring injury.
Orlando hasn't slowed down without Banchero
Orlando (9-7 SU, 8-8 ATS, and 9-7 O/U) beat the Clippers 129-101 as 6.5-point underdogs on Thursday. The Magic are 7-3 both straight-up and against the spread in their last ten (the over was 6-4).
Orlando has won five of its last five, with its lone loss coming in overtime at Houston. The Magic hit 18 threes against the Clippers, scoring 30-plus points in each quarter. LA shot 40 percent overall and committed 21 turnovers, resulting in 33 Orlando points. The Magic score 116.8 points per game (19th) on 47.2 percent shooting (14th), while their opponents average 113.2 points (7th) on 46.3 percent shooting (13th).
Orlando was 41-41 last season, finishing seventh in the East. The team had momentum after winning 47 games the prior season, but injuries derailed their progress, as Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs, and Mo Wagner all missed time. The Magic were still among the top defensive squads in the NBA, ranking third in defensive rating with elite on-ball defense and defensive rebounding. Wagner leads the team in scoring this season, averaging 22.8 points with 6.4 rebounds per game. A few other Magic players to watch against the Knicks are Bane (16.8 PPG and 4.5 APG), C Wendell Carter Jr. (12.4 PPG and 7.6 RPG), and Suggs (13.4 PPG, 4.9 APG, and 1.7 SPG).
With better health, Orlando figures to be competitive in the EC title chase in 2025-26. The front office let go of a few veteran players, including Cole Anthony and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, but also made several under-the-radar moves to improve the team. The biggest addition was the Memphis guard Bane, who averaged 19.2 points and 5.3 dimes last season. A career 40.7 percent three-point shooter, Bane brings shooting touch to a Magic backcourt that was sorely missing long-range accuracy (last in 3PT%). F Tristan da Silva (11.9 PPG) and G Anthony Black (11.7 PPG) are also playing significant minutes this season, helping build the team's depth.
Orlando Magic Basketball Injury Report
- Banchero (groin) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Clippers.
- C Mo Wagner (knee) remains without a timetable to return to the court.
Knicks vs. Magic Pick and Preview
Moneyline Pick for Knicks vs. Magic
- Orlando ML (5 Units)
The Magic have turned a corner defensively (2nd in defensive efficiency rating), picking up where they left off the past two seasons. They held New York to 107 points and 31 percent shooting from long range last week, winning comfortably despite losing Banchero to an injury after only 12 minutes of action. They'll play without their star forward again on Saturday, but they haven't missed a beat in his absence, winning three of four, with the only loss coming in overtime at Houston. I anticipate they'll attack the Knicks in the paint and force their way to the foul line a lot (1st in FT attempt rate), as they did in the first matchup. New York is a veteran-led, well-seasoned team with a realistic shot at a deep run in the NBA playoffs, but they're coming off a couple of subpar performances and could struggle to figure out the Orlando defense on the road tomorrow.
Over/Under Pick for Knicks vs. Magic
- Over 230 (5 Units)
Betting Trends: The over is 7-3 in the Knicks' last ten and 6-4 in Orlando's previous ten games.
I anticipate a closer score in this game than last week's 124-107 Orlando victory, with each team cracking the 115-point mark. Both New York and Orlando will get to the foul line a lot (combined for 56 free throws last game), where Orlando shoots 80% and New York shoots 79%. These squads are average-paced, but New York averages the shortest defensive possession length in the NBA, which could encourage the home team to play at a slightly faster tempo. While there will be a fair amount of defensive intensity from both teams, it won't surprise me if there are a few hot scoring stretches, as the Knicks can knock down plenty of three-balls, while the Magic rank 6th in offensive rebounding rate and draw plenty of foul calls on their opponents.
