The Clippers are free-falling
The Los Angeles Clippers (3-8; 1-10 ATS; 6-5 O/U) extended their losing streak to six games this past Wednesday, suffering a 130-116 home loss against the Denver Nuggets. The Clippers had a 10-point lead with 1:31 left in the first half, but they couldn’t hold on. The Nuggets outscored LA 43-22 in the third quarter, and Nikola Jokic finished the game with 55 points.
The Clippers went 16-for-37 from downtown and 18-for-19 from the foul line, but it wasn’t enough. Their defense was bad once more, and the Clippers are now 26th in the NBA in adjusted defensive efficiency (120.8 points allowed per 100 possessions).
James Harden notched 23 points and five assists against Denver, while Jordan Miller scored 22 points off the bench. Harden finished the game with a minus-24 net rating. Kawhi Leonard missed his fifth straight game due to an ankle injury, and the six-time All-Star will miss a few more games. Bradley Beal is set to undergo a season-ending hip surgery.
The injury-depleted Mavs continue to struggle
The Dallas Mavericks (3-9; 5-7 ATS; 4-8 O/U) have only won one of their previous seven games overall. After stopping a four-game slide with a 111-105 road victory over the Washington Wizards, the Mavericks dropped consecutive home games against the Milwaukee Bucks 116-114 and the Phoenix Suns 123-114.
Last Wednesday, the Mavericks shot 50.0% from the field (17-for-47 from deep) against Phoenix, but they committed 21 turnovers and gave up 13 offensive rebounds. Klay Thompson led the way for Dallas with 19 points off the bench, while Brandon Williams tallied 17 points and nine assists. Cooper Flagg had 16 points, six boards, and six assists.
Anthony Davis missed seven straight games with a calf injury, and he’s questionable for Friday’s clash against the Clippers. Both P.J. Washington and Dereck Lively II are listed as questionable, too, so the Mavericks’ frontcourt might be thin once more. Kyrie Irving is still recovering from a knee injury without a clear timetable for his return.
Clippers vs. Mavericks Pick
Spread Pick for Clippers vs. Mavericks
- Dallas Mavericks (4 units)
The Clippers score 114.6 points per 100 possessions (20th in the NBA), while the Mavericks tally just 104.9 points per 100 possessions (30th). However, the Mavericks look like a much better defensive team than LA. Dallas allows 111.3 points per 100 possessions (tied for 4th) on 34.4% shooting from beyond the arc (7th).
LA allows a whopping 16.2 3-pointers per 100 possessions (30th) on a 39.4 percentage clip (29th). The Mavericks make just 30.3% of their shots from deep (29th), but their defense will keep them in this game. I’ll pick my poison with the Mavericks. The Clippers haven’t covered in nine straight outings.
Over/Under Pick for Clippers vs. Mavericks
- Under (4 units)
The Mavericks play at the fourth-fastest pace in the NBA, recording 102.7 possessions per 48 minutes. However, their offense leaves a lot to be desired, and the Mavs lean on their defense. On the other side, the Clippers struggle to defend, but they play at the slowest pace in the league (95.6 possessions per 48 minutes).
The Clippers just allowed 130 points to the Nuggets. The Mavericks don’t have that kind of firepower, so I will go with the under on the total. Eight of Dallas’ last 12 games overall have gone under.
