Lakers lost some momentum on Saturday

The Lakers shot 40 percent from three and outrebounded the Hawks 47-37 with 13 offensive rebounds, but trailed by as many as 30, as they committed 20 turnovers that led to 36 Atlanta points. G Luka DonΔiΔ leads the Lakers in scoring at 37.0 points per game on 50.0 percent shooting. He also averages 10.0 rebounds, 9.5 assists, and 1.8 steals. Los Angeles scores 117.8 points per game (15th) on 51.3 percent shooting (1st), including 33.7 percent from three-point distance (22nd). The Lakers' opponents average 117.1 points per game (16th) on 47.8 percent shooting (20th), including 35.9 percent from deep (17th).
LA went 50-32 last season, finishing third in the Western Conference. The Lakers' regular-season success didn't translate to the postseason, though, as they were bounced in the first round. The front office made a stunning mid-season move last season for DonΔiΔ, shipping star forward Anthony Davis to Dallas. With LeBron James and Luka leading, the Lake Show has a chance to be special again. While James is currently sidelined with Sciatica, the Lakers are still off to a hot start. Free-agent additions Deandre Ayton (17.5 PPG and 8.4 RPG), Jake LaRavia (12.1 PPG and 5.2 RPG), and Marcus Smart (10.3 PPG and 3.4 APG) have all been impressive, and Austin Reaves (31.1 PPG, 9.3 APG, and 5.1 RPG) and Rui Hachimura (16.7 PPG on 59% shooting) are playing up to their potential.
Los Angeles Lakers Basketball Injury Report:Β Reaves (groin) is a game-time decision.
Charlotte needs to play better at home
Charlotte (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS, and 4-5 O/U) lost 126-108 to Miami on Friday in NBA Cup group play. The Heat shot 51 percent overall and held the Hornets to 38 percent, including 10-for-39 (25.6%) from deep. Charlotte was at its best at the free-throw line (24-for-27) and on the glass (57-37 rebounding advantage with 19 offensive rebounds). Miami dominated inside (70 points in the paint) and forced 18 Hornets turnovers.
G LaMelo Ball leads Charlotte in scoring at 23.3 points per game. He also averages 9.8 assists, 7.8 rebounds, and 1.7 steals. The Hornets score 119.0 points per game (13th) on 46.8 percent shooting (17th), including 36.8 percent from three-point range (13th). Defensively, Charlotte allows 121.0 points per game (26th) on 48.6 percent shooting (24th), including 39.7 percent from beyond the arc (28th).
Charlotte went 19-63 last season, finishing 14th in the East and missing the playoffs for the ninth straight season. Injuries stung the Hornets, as Ball and Brandon Miller missed a lot of playing time, leaving Miles Bridges (20.3 PPG in 64 games) as the team's leading scorer. The Hornets made several intriguing moves in the offseason, picking Duke sharp-shooting freshman Kon Knueppel with the fourth pick in the draft and adding late first/early second-round talent in UConn forward Liam McNeeley, Duke guard Sion James, and Creighton center Ryan Kalkbrenner. The front office also traded for former first-round pick Collin Sexton and brought in veterans Pat Connaughton, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Mason Plumlee to support their young core.
Charlotte Hornets Basketball Injury Report:Β Ball (ankle), SF Josh Green (shoulder), and PF Grant Williams (knee) are expected to be out. Bridges (back) and SF Drew Peterson (calf) are game-time decisions.
Lakers vs. Hornets Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Lakers vs. Hornets
- Los Angeles -8 (5 Units)
Aside from a four-point loss to Philadelphia, Charlotte hasn't been competitive against good teams, failing to cover the spread against Miami (twice), Orlando, and Minnesota. It lost by double digits in all four games, with an average margin of defeat of 19.5 points. The Lakers' offense will overwhelm the Hornets to cover on Monday with an efficient inside-out game. Los Angeles shoots 68.5 percent at the rim (5th) and 55.9 percent from the mid-range (1st), and Charlotte is bottom-five defending the three-point line. LA also gets to the foul line often, ranking 2nd in the NBA in free-throw rate.
Over/Under Pick for Lakers vs. Hornets
- Under 230.5 (4 Units)
Los Angeles prefers a slower tempo, averaging the fifth-longest possession length in the NBA, and Charlotte ranks 18th in offensive possession length. While LA will score in bunches, that doesn't ensure the over will cash. Charlotte has struggled offensively and is unlikely to have Ball on Monday. The under has won in five straight Hornets games, as they have been uncompetitive recently, aside from a blowout win over New Orleans. While the Lakers were trending toward the over recently, they scored just 102 points in Atlanta on Saturday, the first stop on their five-game road trip.
