The Clippers eye their third straight W
The Los Angeles Clippers (2-1; 1-2 ATS; 2-1 O/U) suffered an embarrassing 129-108 road loss against the Utah Jazz in their season opener. Utah won the first quarter 43-19 and never looked back, while LA looked helpless on both sides of the ball.
The Clippers bounced back in style, winning their next two games over the Phoenix Suns 129-102 and the Portland Trail Blazers 114-107 at home. Against Phoenix, the Clippers shot 59.2% from the field (16-for-29 from deep). Versus Portland, LA erased a 12-point deficit while making 55.0% of its field goals (12-for-31 from deep).
The Clippers held the Trail Blazers to 37.0% shooting from the field. Yet, LA committed a staggering 24 turnovers and gave up 18 offensive rebounds. There’s a lot of space for improvement in the Clippers’ game, as they rank 15th in the NBA in adjusted defensive efficiency (116.0 points allowed per 100 possessions) and 29th in defensive rebound percentage (67.8%).
Kawhi Leonard is LA’s leading scorer with 22.3 points per game. James Harden tallies 21.7 points and 10.3 assists per game, while Ivica Zubac adds 16.0 points and 6.7 rebounds a night. Bradley Beal (back) missed the Trail Blazers game and is questionable for Tuesday’s clash against Golden State.
The Warriors need more from their defense
The Golden State Warriors were 2-1 SU and ATS on Monday morning (3-0 O/U). They strung together a couple of wins over the Los Angeles Lakers, 119-109 and the Denver Nuggets, 137-131 in overtime, before suffering a heavy 139-119 defeat at the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Warriors allowed just eight 3-pointers to the Lakers, but their defense was pretty bad in the next two games. The Nuggets shot 53.7% from the field (16-for-40 from deep), while the Trail Blazers made 53.8% of their field goals while going 16-for-34 from downtown.
Moreover, Portland and Denver combined for 122 points in the paint. The Warriors are dead last in the league in opposing 2-point percentage (64.8%) and 28th in adjusted defensive efficiency (120.5). On the other side of the ball, the Warriors rely on 3-pointers. They are fourth in 3-point percentage (40.8%) and sixth in 3-point rate (.486).
Stephen Curry leads the way for the Warriors with 33.3 points per game, while Jimmy Butler tallies 22.0 points a night. De’Anthony Melton (knee) will miss the early portion of the regular season, while Al Horford (toe) was ruled out for Monday’s game against Memphis.
Clippers vs. Warriors Pick
Spread Pick for Clippers vs. Warriors
- Los Angeles Clippers (4 units)
The Warriors suffered that heavy loss against the Trail Blazers on the second night of a back-to-back. Now, they meet a much formidable team in the LA Clippers, though this time, the Warriors are playing at home.
Anyway, this is a tricky spot for the Warriors, so I will take the Clippers, who have shown character following that loss against the Jazz in their season opener. The Clippers are a deep team, and their frontcourt should be able to dominate the Warriors in the paint.
Keep your eyes on Ivica Zubac, who was averaging 17.5 points and 15.8 rebounds through four games against the Warriors last season. Should Al Horford remain on the shelf, the Warriors will struggle to cope with Zubac.
Over/Under Pick for Clippers vs. Warriors
- Over (4 units)
The Clippers will try to slow things down in this game, whereas the Warriors would certainly like to run up and down the floor as much as possible, despite playing on the second night of a back-to-back. The over has hit in six of Golden State’s last seven games overall and five of LA’s previous six.
Both teams are executing at a high level, so I will take the over. The Warriors will continue to lean on 3-pointers, and the Clippers have some dangerous shooters, too. LA makes 40.0% of its shots from beyond the arc (5th in the NBA).
