Los Angeles Rolls With Reaves

The Los Angeles Lakers have been dealing with injuries in the early part of their season, as Luka Doncic has only played in two games, and LeBron James has yet to hit the floor. The Lakers have always believed in Austin Reaves, but the 27-year-old guard has proved his worth over the past three games, as he scored 51 on the Kings, 41 on the Blazers, and then hit the game-winning shot against the Timberwolves. The two Laker stars are expected to be back soon, but the coaching staff is thrilled to see Reaves' production over the past few games.

Luka Doncic is not likely to play here with his injury to his finger and leg, while LeBron is not expected to return until mid-November at best. This is why Reaves has been asked to step up his game, he is averaging 34.2 PPG through his first five games of the season, while also dishing out 10.0 APG and to go with his 5.6 RPG. Rui Hachimura is their outside shooting power forward who has also taken on a bigger role due to the team's injuries. Hachimura is averaging 16.6 PPG and 4.0 RPG. DeAndre Ayton was brought in to be the answer at the center position. He has been solid with 16.0 PPG and 9.4 RPG, but many are still waiting for the skilled big man to explode into an All-Star.

Jarred Vanderbilt is a starter at the forward position, with his strongest skill set being his defensive intensity, as he can take on the top perimeter players from the opposing team. Jake LaRavia has been forced into the starting lineup, as their top bench performers will likely be Dalton Knecht and Jaxson Hayes. The Lakers rank 24th in the league in possessions per game.

Out: LeBron James, Luka Doncic, Maxi Kleber, Gabe Vincent

Questionable: Marcus Smart

Memphis Has Two Stars

The Memphis Grizzlies are also battling injuries and are still adjusting to their new lineup after trading away Desmond Bane in the offseason. The Grizzlies still have their top two players healthy, as Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. have been strong to start the season. Memphis returns home after losing in Golden State, then grabbing a one-point win over the Suns in Phoenix. In their game against the Suns, Ja Morant had 28 points in the win.

Morant always has a strong presence on the floor, as he also added eight rebounds and seven assists in the win. Ja has been their top scorer this season with his 23.4 PPG and also leads the team with 6.6 APG. Jaren Jackson Jr. is their other star player; he is getting 17.6 PPG and 5.2 RPG while being the team's defensive anchor. Jackson has scored 16 or more in each of the five games this season. The best surprise for Memphis has been the play of rookie Cedric Coward, the 6'5 wing out of Washington State is getting 16.0 PPG to start the season off the bench.

Santi Aldama has been their top rebounder despite coming off the bench; he grabs 7.6 RPG to go with his 11.0 PPG. Jaylen Wells and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope also start on the perimeter. Memphis plays fast, as it ranks 6th in the league in possessions per game.

Lakers vs. Grizzlies picks

Spread pick and prediction for Lakers vs. Grizzlies

  • Lakers +3.5 (5 units)

The Vegas line has moved, as the Lakers were originally getting 4.5 points before the money started pouring in on Los Angeles. The Lakers are without Doncic and LeBron, but that doesn't mean they are out, as the role players have been able to step up. Austin Reaves is more than a role player, but has been proving his worth over the past three games, including two 40+ scoring outputs and a game-winning shot at the buzzer. The Lakers have been getting strong contributions from Hachimura, while Ayton is still a formidable force that will make life difficult for JJJ. The Lakers have been hot, and we will ride this train while getting points here in this NBA Cup showdown.

Over/Under Pick for Lakers vs. Grizzlies

  • Under 236.5 (4 units)

The Lakers have been playing at a slow pace, and will continue that here as they are still without their two future Hall of Famers. The Lakers are short on weapons, and considering that Austin Reaves cannot score 60 points a night, they will want to slow this game down to keep it a low scoring battle. The Grizzlies have a handful of injuries as well, with just their top two players healthy and a selection of role players behind them. Each team is without valuable pieces, and the Lakers will want to keep the pace slow in this one, which will result in an under.

Take the under.
