Los Angeles Lakers (1-1) vs. Sacramento Kings (1-1)

The Los Angeles Lakers head to Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA, on Sunday night to square off against the Sacramento Kings in the Pacific Division showdown with the tip-off at 9:00 PM ET, and we’ve got you covered with our Lakers vs. Kings prediction.

The Lakers and Kings start their four-game regular-season series. In 2024-25, the Lakers swept the Kings while going 4-0 ATS in the process. Interestingly, two seasons ago, the Kings went 4-0 SU and ATS against the Lakers. Now, let’s take a closer look at this Lakers vs. Kings prediction, one of our NBA picks for Sunday’s slate.

The Lakers lean on Luka Doncic in LeBron’s absence

The Los Angeles Lakers took the floor on opening night, suffering a 119-109 defeat to the Golden State Warriors. Purple-and-Gold made just eight of their 32 attempts from beyond the arc and missed 11 of their 28 shots from the foul line. Moreover, they turned the ball over 20 times, so 62 points in the paint didn’t help a lot.

The Lakers bounced back last Friday, beating the Minnesota Timberwolves 128-110 in front of the home fans. Los Angeles shot 59.2% from the field (12-for-29 from deep) and 81.3% from the foul line (26-for-32). The Lakers committed just 12 turnovers and outscored the Timberwolves 54-46 in the paint.

Purple-and-Gold cannot count on LeBron James, who’ll miss the first few weeks of the season due to sciatica. Luka Doncic tortured the Warriors for 43 points and dropped 49 on the Timberwolves, becoming the fourth player in NBA history with consecutive 40-point games to start a season.

Doncic also shattered the franchise record for the most points scored in the first two games of a season and tied Kobe Bryant and Kyle Kuzma for the most first-quarter points in team history with 23.

The Kings barely outlasted the Jazz

The Sacramento Kings started their 2025-26 campaign last Wednesday, suffering a 120-116 defeat at the Phoenix Suns. The Kings blew a 20-point lead and failed to cover a 3.5-point spread. They shot 50.0% from the field (9-for-24 from deep) but gave up 64 points in the paint and a staggering 18 offensive rebounds.

The Kings bounced back with a 105-104 victory over the Utah Jazz this past Friday. Sacramento shot 48.2% from the field (14-for-32 from downtown). The Kings held the Jazz to 44.2% shooting from the field (13-for-41 from deep) and committed seven fewer turnovers than Utah (20-13), but Sacramento was outrebounded once more (50-33).

Yet, Domantas Sabonis scored off an offensive rebound with six seconds left on the clock to lift the Kings over the Jazz. After missing the season opener due to an injury, Sabonis posted a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds last Friday.

Zach LaVine scored 30 points against Phoenix and 31 against Utah. Malik Monk had 19 points in the Kings’ season opener and 20 in the Jazz game, while DeMar DeRozan accounted for just seven points against Utah after tallying 29 versus the Suns.

Lakers vs. Kings Pick

Spread Pick for Lakers vs. Kings

  • Los Angeles Lakers (4 units)

Luka Doncic is not just scoring points. He’s averaging 11.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists through the first two games of the season. Austin Reaves posted a double-double of 25 points and 11 assists against the Timberwolves, and Rui Hachimura had 23 points versus Minnesota, so the Lakers have enough weapons to deal with LeBron’s absence.

The Kings will try their best to slow Luka down, but I don’t think they have defensive stoppers to do it. The Lakers will continue to attack the rim, and I don’t trust the Kings’ defense to contain them. I expect the Lakers to prevail over Sacramento and beat the number.

Over/Under Pick for Lakers vs. Kings

  • Over (4 units)

Neither side leans on 3-pointers or plays at a fast pace, but I will take the over on the total. The Lakers register 96.5 possessions per 48 minutes (25th in the NBA). However, they lead the league in true shooting percentage (66.1%) and rank fourth in free-throw rate (.392).

The Kings are 18th in pace (100.5), 19th in true shooting percentage (57.0%), and 28th in free-throw rate (.215). They will try to speed things up and force the Lakers to run up and down the floor, looking to take advantage of Los Angeles’ flaws in transition.
