The Lakers play without rest
Tuesday’s games have been excluded from the analysis, and the Los Angeles Lakers visited the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night, searching for their third straight victory. In their previous two outings, the Lakers have recorded a couple of home wins over the Memphis Grizzlies, 128-121 and 120-114.
Last Friday, the Lakers dropped 128 points on the Grizzlies and covered a 5.5-point spread. Luka Doncic accounted for 34 points and eight assists, and the Lakers made 58.4% of their field goals (11-for-32 from deep). Two days later, the Lakers covered a 5.5-point spread once more, and Doncic led the way with 36 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists.
The Lakers score 118.3 points per 100 possessions (7th in the NBA) and allow 118.3 points in return (tied for 23rd). They cannot count on Austin Reaves (26.6 PPG, 6.3 APG) and Rui Hachimura (12.7 PPG), while Gabe Vincent (4.7 PPG) was listed as doubtful for Tuesday’s game against New Orleans.
The Spurs are on the second day of a back-to-back, too
The San Antonio Spurs visited the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night, looking to bounce back from Saturday’s 115-110 home loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. After consecutive wins over the New York Knicks 134-132 at home and the Indiana Pacers 123-113 on the road, the Spurs trailed the Trail Blazers for most of the night and by as many as 15 points.
The Spurs hit just 10 of their 31 shots from deep last Saturday. Luke Kornet surprisingly led the way with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Julian Champagnie double-doubled with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Victor Wembanyama (24.3 PPG, 11.7 RPG) missed his second straight game with a knee injury, and he was questionable for Tuesday’s clash against Memphis.
Devin Vassell (15.0 PPG) was set to miss the Grizzlies game due to a left adductor strain. Wembanyama participated in Tuesday’s shootaround, so keep tracking the injury report. The Spurs score 119.1 points per 100 possessions (6th in the NBA) and surrender 113.5 points in return (8th).
Lakers vs. Spurs Pick
Spread Pick for Lakers vs. Spurs
- San Antonio Spurs (4 units)
There are a lot of moving parts in this game, as both teams take the floor on the second day of a back-to-back. The Lakers might decide to rest some of their players, including LeBron James, while on the other side, Victor Wembanyama’s status remains up in the air.
I’m going to take the Spurs because of their defense. San Antonio is arguably a better defensive team than Los Angeles. The Lakers have struggled a lot to defend thus far, and the Spurs are very dangerous even with Wembanyama on the sidelines.
Both De’Aaron Fox (21.7 PPG, 5.8 APG) and Stephon Castle (17.9 PPG, 7.1 APG) have done a great job this season. With Devin Vassell on the shelf, Julian Champagnie (10.8 PPG, 5.8 RPG) emerged as an important part of the Spurs’ rotation.
The last time they met, the Spurs beat the Lakers by 13 points despite missing Wembanyama. San Antonio went 17-for-38 from deep, and Castle led the way with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists. On the other side, Luka Doncic had 35 points and eight assists, and LeBron added 19 points and 15 rebounds.
Over/Under Pick for Lakers vs. Spurs
- Over (4 units)
Neither side leans on 3-pointers a lot. Yet, these two teams love to attack the rim and get to the free-throw line. The Lakers lead the NBA in 2-point percentage (61.1%) and free-throw rate (.343). The Spurs are fifth in 2-point percentage (56.9%) and seventh in free-throw rate (.296).
Although the Lakers don’t like to play fast, I have to go with the over. Their defense is 26th in the league in 2-point percentage (56.7%) and 29th in 3-point percentage (37.7%). The Spurs are much better in these categories, but slowing down the Lakers’ offense won’t be an easy task.
