Mavericks' offense has been lifeless this season
Dallas (2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS, and 2-6 O/U) lost 101-99 to New Orleans on Wednesday, its fourth loss in its previous five games. The Mavs have struggled offensively this season, shooting just 41 percent from the floor against the Pelicans' 28th-ranked defense. Dallas was outrebounded 56-44 and committed 15 turnovers, leading to 18 New Orleans points.
Forward Anthony Davis paces the Mavericks with 20.8 points per game on 52.0 percent shooting. He also averages 10.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals. The Mavs score 106.3 points (30th) on 44.0 percent shooting (26th), including 31.5 percent from three-point distance (28th). Dallas' opponents average 113.8 points per game (8th) on 46.2 percent shooting (12th), including 33.1 percent from beyond the arc (4th).
The Mavericks went 38-43 last season, finishing 10th in the Western Conference standings. They lost to Memphis in the Play-In Tournament. On the heels of an NBA Finals appearance, Dallas mixed things up, trading star guard Luka Donฤiฤ to the Lakers for Davis, SG Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick. The shocking move sent shockwaves through the league, but after landing Duke sensation Cooper Flagg with the number one pick, it has helped solidify the Mavs' core. While Kyrie Irving recovers from last seasonโs torn ACL, DโAngelo Russell will play the point, distributing the basketball to a deep Dallas frontcourt rotation of Davis, Flagg, P.J. Washington, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, and Dwight Powell.
Dallas Mavericks Basketball Injury Report: Davis (leg) is day-to-day, while PG Dante Exum (knee) and C Dereck Lively II (knee) sat out Friday's game.
Washington has a young core with brimming potential
Washington (1-7 SU, 1-7 ATS, and 5-3 O/U) lost 136-107 to Boston on Wednesday, its sixth straight defeat. It was the Wizards' fourth consecutive game with fewer than 110 points, as they committed 19 costly turnovers. The Celtics scored 30 points off those turnovers and knocked down 16 three-pointers.
Center Alex Sarr leads Washington with 19.0 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 2.3 blocks per game. The second-year pro shoots 54.0 percent from the floor. The Wizards score 112.0 points per game (26th) on 45.7 percent shooting (20th), including 37.7 percent from beyond the arc (10th). Defensively, Washington gives up 128.3 points per game (30th), and its opponents shoot 48.5 percent (24th), including 36.6 percent from beyond the arc (20th).
The Wizards went 18-64 last season, finishing 15th in the Eastern Conference. Washington was in a clear rebuild, as rookies accounted for 35 percent of the team's minutes. The front office made a few moves to resign and acquire veteran players this offseason, as well. Khris Middleton picked up his player option, and CJ McCollum was brought in via a trade with New Orleans, giving the Wiz two former All-Stars to lead the group. Malcolm Brogdon (free agent), Jordan Poole (trade), and Marcus Smart (waived) were allowed to leave, with youngsters Cam Whitmore (20th pick in the 2023 NBA draft) and Tre Johnson (sixth pick in the 2025 draft) brought in to take their place. Big man Alex Sarr is the centerpiece of the Wizards' rebuild after he averaged 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.5 blocks as a rookie.
Washington Wizards Basketball Injury Report:ย George (illness) is day-to-day, and SF Bilal Coulibaly (leg) was out for Friday's game.
Mavericks vs. Wizards Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Mavs vs. Wizards
- Washington covers the spread (4 Units)
I don't trust the Mavs to cover the spread on the road in the second game of a back-to-back. They scored 110 or fewer points in five straight games before Friday night's game in Memphis, including 102 or fewer points in three of those games. They're inefficient inside the arc (26th in 2PT%) and no better from long range. The Mavs are also last in the league in offensive rebounding rate, which is inexcusable given how many talented forwards are on their roster. That's unlikely to change tomorrow, as the Wizards are top ten in opponent offensive rebounding rate. Washington's young legs will be more ready to bounce back for Saturday's game, too. Dallas will challenge them on the perimeter, but the visitors' rim defense (27th in opponent Rim%) is a concern.
Bet on the Wizards to play with more emotion, covering the spread at home on Saturday.
Over/Under Pick for Mavericks vs. Wizards
- Over (5 Units)
This matchup pits two of the highest-tempo teams in the NBA, as the Wizards rank third in pace and the Mavs rank sixth. Both teams average less than 14 seconds per offensive possession, which should lead to plenty of scoring opportunities. While Dallas has struggled to put points on the scoreboard, Washington ranks 29th in defensive rating and has forced the fewest turnovers in the NBA this season. The home team scored 117 points in their first game against Dallas, shooting 41 percent from long range against the Mavs' fourth-ranked three-point defense. If they can shoot a similar percentage from deep and attack the Mavericks' weak rim defense, they'll score in bunches.
