Grizzlies off a big win
The direction of the Memphis Grizzlies franchise has shifted fast. Last season, even with a 44-29 record with nine games remaining, the team decided to fire head coach Taylor Jenkins. Now with Tuomas Iisalo in charge, the franchise feels a lot closer to future lottery picks than to any type of playoff push. There has also been a major disconnect between the coaching staff and superstar Ja Morant.
Without Morant on Thursday, Memphis had its best game of the season, blowing out the Kings by 41 points. Santi Aldama led the way with 29 points on 11-for-18 shooting, and Jock Landale added 21 points off the bench. Zach Edey, who missed the start of the season with an injury, was perfect from the floor, going 7-for-7 with 16 points. Vince Williams Jr. only scored four points, but made a huge impact with 15 assists.
On the season, the Grizzlies rank 23rd in the NBA, averaging just under 113 points per game. They struggle shooting the basketball, hitting only 27% from three, and ranking 29th in overall field goal percentage. Defensively, they’re 19th, giving up 117.8 points per game. Morant leads the team with 17.9 points and 7.6 assists per game.
Ja Morant is still out and expected to miss at least two more weeks with a right calf strain. Jaren Jackson Jr. is also unlikely to play on Saturday.
Big game for Flagg
On Friday night, the Mavs picked up their fifth win of the season. Rookie Cooper Flagg shot 12-for-19 from the field and finished with a game-high 29 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. PJ Washington had a team-best nine rebounds and scored 24 points, and Max Christie chipped in 23. Brandon Williams had a tough shooting night, going 1-for-12 for five points, but he did hand out 12 assists.
On the season, Flagg leads the Mavericks in scoring with Anthony Davis still out. Coming into Friday, he was averaging 15.5 points and 6.3 rebounds and Washington was averaging 14.4 points and leads the team with 7.7 rebounds.
Offensively, Dallas is bottom four in points per game at 110.3 and also bottom four in field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage. Defensively, the Mavericks are 17th, allowing 117 points per game, but they are top ten in both field goal percentage allowed and three-point percentage allowed.
Memphis Grizzlies vs Dallas Mavericks Predictions
Grizzlies vs Mavericks ATS Pick
-
Memphis +2 (5 units)
Ja Morant isn’t playing, and after what we saw Thursday, that should actually help the Grizzlies right now, as they looked like a complete team without him. Guys like Zach Edey and Vince Williams don’t play with big egos; they just play their roles and do the little things. Dallas is coming off a win, but it was against a terrible Pelicans team, and now the Mavericks have to play on the second night of a back-to-back. I have to side with Memphis here.
Grizzlies vs Mavericks Total Pick:
-
Under (4 units)
Offense is not the strength for either team. The Grizzlies have gone under the total in 11 of their 16 games this season, and the Mavericks have gone under in 11 of their 17. These teams faced each other two weeks ago on November 7, and combined for just 222 points, which was 11 points under the posted total.
Dallas has been locked in defensively all season, and Memphis showed real grit on the defensive end in their win over the Kings. I have to take the under.
