Memphis Loses Four Straight

The Memphis Grizzlies come into this nationally televised game in desperate need for a win, as they have lost each of their last four games, only covering the spread in one of those matchups. To make matters worse, star point guard Ja Morant injured his calf, keeping him sidelined for at least two weeks, and missing this game. The Grizzlies are still somehow third in the Southwest Division with their 4-10 record, as the Mavericks and Pelicans continue to struggle. In their recent loss to the Cavs, Jaren Jackson Jr. led Memphis with 26 points in the loss.

Morant only lasted seven minutes in the Cleveland game before leaving with his calf injury, so now the Grizzlies will have to lean on Jackson even more for production. He is getting 17.9 PPG and 5.2 RPG, while leading the team with 1.4 blocks per night. Jackson has always been a reliable three-point shooter for a big man, he is connecting on 37.7% of his attempts from deep this year. Memphis was able to welcome back Zach Edey, as the 7'3, 305-pound big man made his season debut against the Cavs. Edey finished with 13 points and seven boards in 25 minutes.

Cedric Coward made his first career start last time out, and do not be surprised if the productive rookie stays in the starting lineup in games to come. Coward is getting 14.0 PPG and 6.1 RPG. The Grizzlies are 19th in the league in offensive efficiency and 15th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. Memphis ranks 9th in the league in pace of play, but could potentially slow down with Morant out of the lineup.

Injury Report for Grizzlies:

  • Out: Ja Morant (calf), Scotty Pippen Jr. (toe), Ty Jerome (calf), Brandon Clarke (knee)

Spurs Will Be Without Wemby

When the NBC production team was selecting a game for this Tuesday night, they undoubtedly saw this as a Victor Wembanyama vs. Ja Morant showdown. Unfortunately for NBC, and the San Antonio Spurs, Wembanyama will be out a few weeks with a calf strain. Wemby was busy putting up monster numbers this season, but the Spurs will have to learn how to adjust on both ends without their 7'4 big man. The Spurs are coming off a win over the Kings, as they were led by De'Aaron Fox with 28 points and 11 assists in the win.

Fox will have to take back control of the offense in this game, and certainly has the skillset to do so, Fox has averaged over 20.0 PPG in each of the last seven seasons. This season he is getting 22.0 PPG and 6.8 APG, and has scored 20 or more in four of his five games this season. He is joined in the backcourt by second-year player Stephon Castle, the two form an elite defensive duo as they are both averaging over one steal per game. Castle is an athletic wing guard getting 17.3 PPG and 7.5 APG. Devin Vassell is another perimeter scorer; he is averaging 13.8 PPG from his spot on the wing.

Luke Kornet will be asked to start at center in Wemby's absence. Kornet is getting 10.2 PPG and 6.5 RPG. Harrison Barnes starts as a versatile forward who can play the three or four spot. San Antonio is ranked 7th in offensive efficiency and 17th in defensive efficiency. San Antonio ranks 21st in the league in possessions per game.

Grizzlies vs. Spurs Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for Grizzlies vs. Spurs

  • Spurs to cover (4 units)

Take the two stars out of this game, and the Spurs have the better lineup to be poised for success. Memphis is only left with Jackson as a proven scorer, and Coward will now face more defensive pressure as he is the number two option with Morant out. Coward has been playing well, but being defended as the second-best player on the team is different than simply flying under the radar as a rookie. San Antonio still has three high-level guards, all of whom can fill it up on any given night. The combination of Fox, Castle and Vassell will be too much for Memphis, who is without their top two point guards due to Ty Jerome being out as well as Morant. San Antonio will roll here.

Take the Spurs to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Grizzlies vs. Spurs

  • Over (4 units)

The dynamic in this game will completely change without Wemby in the game. He is not slow by any means, but San Antonio will play even faster with him out of the lineup as now their top three scorers are all guards. Memphis is in the top ten in pace of play and will want to keep playing that way in this game. With Wemby out, the Grizzlies will now have a much easier time attacking the basket than they would typically see. There is an incentive for both teams to play fast here, which will push this game to another over.

Take the over.
