Trouble in Memphis

The Memphis Grizzlies gave up a 14-point halftime lead in their loss to the Lakers, but that is not the biggest problem looming in Memphis. Star point guard Ja Morant hinted at problems between himself and the coaching staff, with pointed remarks coming in the press conference after the Lakers' loss. When asked about his poor performance, he responded with, "go ask the coaching staff" and "According to them, probably don't play me, honestly." Morant finished the game shooting just 3-14 with eight points in the loss.

The Grizzlies will have to figure out how to get the coaching staff and Morant to coexist, as Morant currently is on a five-year, $197.2 million contract extension. It hasn't been all bad for Morant, as he still leads the team with 20.8 PPG and 6.7 APG, but is shooting just 15.6% from beyond the three. Jaren Jackson Jr. is their other star player; the big man is averaging 17.2 PPG and 5.0 RPG to start the season. Jackson can stretch the floor, as he is connecting on 36.4% of his threes so far. The biggest surprise for the Grizz has been the play of rookie Cedric Coward, the 22-year-old old came out of Washington State, and has impressed by scoring 15.5 PPG in his early rookie campaign.

Jaylen Wells is their second-year guard on the wing. He is getting 10.5 PPG this season. The starting lineup has been rounded out by veteran Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and big man Jock Landale, who is subbing in for Zach Edey until he is healthy. The Grizzlies are currently 21st in offensive efficiency and 13th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. Memphis is 7th in the league in possessions per game.

Injury Report:

Out: Zach Edey, Ty Jerome, Brandon Clarke, Scotty Pippen Jr.

Raptors Snap Four-Game Skid

The Toronto Raptors had lost their last four games before coming into their most recent matchup with Cleveland, but pulled off a strong road win against one of the favorites in the Eastern Conference. Their road was not easy to start the season, as they battled Giannis, Durant, and Wemby all on different nights in their losing streak. Toronto got a much-needed taste of victory last time out against Cleveland, using a balanced effort as three separate players all finished with exactly 20 points in the win.

The players to reach 20 in scoring were Brandon Ingram, RJ Barrett, and Jamison Battle. Ingram has been their top scorer through six games, scoring 21.7 PPG. The lanky wing has always had talent, but has battled injuries through most of his tenure in New Orleans before coming over in a trade last year. He is now paired with RJ Barrett, who has been one of the most underrated scorers in the league over the past couple of seasons. He is getting 19.3 PPG this year. Battle came off the bench to score his 20; he went 6-6 from deep to eclipse his previous season high of 12.

The best player on the team could be Scottie Barnes, who has a strong all-around game and is averaging 20.8 PPG, 6.7 RPG and 4.5 APG. Immanuel Quickly has been handling the point guard duties, with rookie forward Collin Murray-Boyles getting his chance to make an impression in the starting lineup. Toronto is ranked 18th in offensive efficiency and 22nd in defensive efficiency. The Raptors average the 10th most possessions per game.

Injury Report:

Out: Jakob Poeltl

Grizzlies vs. Raptors picks

Spread pick and prediction for Grizzlies vs. Raptors

  • Raptors to cover (5 units)

When the star point guard complains about the coaching staff after a poor performance and a loss, that is a great time to fade the team in their next game. Something is off in Memphis, with Morant voicing frustrations with the coaching staff, which seems to be going both ways. On top of that, the Grizzlies are not playing at full strength, dealing with injuries to four players who would be in their rotation. The biggest vacancies are Ty Jerome and Zach Edey, because Jerome would be able to take the point guard spot in stretches if Morant struggles, and Edey is their mountain of a big man in the middle. The Raptors only have Poeltl injured, which is not a big problem considering Edey is also out. The Raptors have three strong wings in Ingram, Barnes and Barrett; they will be too much for the trouble Grizzlies here.

Take the Raptors to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Grizzlies vs. Raptors

  • Over (4 units)

These teams are both in the top ten in the league in possessions per game and will play fast here. One way to limit scoring is by having a strong rim protector, but both starting centers are out of this game with injuries, as Edey and Poeltl will watch the game from the sidelines. This will allow the athletic guards and wings more of a free pass to the rim, and each team will capitalize on this by pushing the pace in transition. Memphis is 7th in the league in possessions per game, and Toronto is 10th. The Raptors have gone over in four of their six games this season, and will go over again here.

Take the over.
