Lakers vs Rockets Game 3 prediction

Memphis has yet to lose this season, but Monday's visit to Salt Lake City is a different test from its first three games. The Grizzlies are coming off a 123-112 victory at Sacramento on Sunday night and must immediately face a Utah team eager to avenge last week's 20-point loss in Memphis. Ty Jerome's scoring has been the biggest story of the visitors' start, while Lauri Markkanen and Keyonte George give the Jazz enough offensive punch to make the rematch significantly tighter.

Memphis Grizzlies vs Utah Jazz Matchup Preview

Memphis Grizzlies: Unbeaten, but Facing a Turnaround Test

Memphis has opened 3-0 with wins over Utah, Golden State and Sacramento. The Grizzlies have scored at least 111 points in each victory and survived a tense finish on Sunday after the Kings erased a double-digit deficit. With the score tied at 106 late in the fourth quarter, Memphis responded with the decisive run instead of allowing Sacramento to steal the game. That's an encouraging sign for a young roster, but repeating that effort less than 24 hours later is another matter.

Jerome delivered 31 points in Sacramento, hitting all 14 of his free throws. That followed a 45-point outburst in the season opener against Utah. He has been taking on a major share of Memphis' creation duties, combining perimeter shooting with the ability to draw fouls. Utah cannot assume his production is a one-game anomaly, and defending him without creating easy opportunities for his teammates is the Jazz's biggest assignment.

Cameron Boozer has already become an important part of the frontcourt. He finished Sunday's win with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Cedric Coward added 15 points and 11 boards after returning to the starting lineup. Jaylen Wells supplied another 16 points. That distribution is why Memphis remains dangerous even when Jerome is not hitting difficult jumpers.

The interior rotation is worth watching. Zach Edey sat out Sunday's victory for left ankle injury management, and Isaiah Stewart started at center. Memphis may change that alignment again Monday, depending on Edey's availability. Either way, the visitors face an unusual physical burden: a late game in Sacramento followed by overnight travel and another contest at altitude.

Utah Jazz: More Offense Than the First Meeting Showed

Utah enters at 1-2, but Sunday's 132-123 loss to the Lakers was not a lifeless performance. The Jazz scored 47 first-quarter points and led by as many as 18 before Los Angeles rallied. Markkanen scored 28, and George finished with 24 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. Utah's challenge is to extend that offensive rhythm for four quarters instead of relying on a single explosive stretch.

The Jazz were beaten 123-103 in Memphis on October 21, with Jerome's 45 points overwhelming their perimeter coverage. This rematch provides a chance to change the defensive angles. Utah can use Jaren Jackson Jr. around the lane, force Jerome away from his preferred spots and make the rest of the Memphis lineup convert contested opportunities. That will be especially important if Edey's status limits the Grizzlies' size and rebounding.

Markkanen is also a difficult cover for Memphis because he can score over smaller wings or pull a bigger defender away from the paint. George gives Utah a second reliable creator who can attack when Memphis overcommits to Markkanen. Darryn Peterson and Ace Bailey add youthful scoring options, although the Jazz must be more disciplined getting back in transition than they were against the Lakers.

Jusuf Nurkic has been unavailable with a foot injury, so Utah's frontcourt combinations and rebounding responsibilities remain important. The Jazz are not a complete defensive team, but their home setting and fresher travel situation give them a better opportunity to control the pace than they had in the first meeting.

Matchup Keys

The opening minutes may tell us how much Memphis has left after Sunday's win. Jerome can beat single coverage, but asking him to drive possession after possession against a set defense may be harder on the second night of a back-to-back. Utah should put size in his path, then stay attached to Coward and Wells so Memphis cannot turn every help rotation into an open three.

At the other end, Memphis must handle Utah's spacing without giving up easy rebounds. Markkanen's ability to play outside and Jackson's activity around the basket can stretch a smaller Grizzlies lineup. The Jazz also have a reason to run after stops: Memphis will be managing both a travel turnaround and the physical effects of playing late Sunday night.

The difference between these teams may ultimately be the fourth quarter. Memphis closed confidently at Sacramento, but Utah has more opportunity to preserve its legs with no overnight city change. If the game remains close, that edge can turn a one-possession contest into a narrow home win.

Odds and Line Movement

Utah is a modest home favorite, generally around 1.5 points. The Jazz moneyline has moved only slightly from approximately -120 at the open to the -115 range at some books, while posted game totals sit around 237.5 to 238.5. That's a tight market given Memphis' undefeated start and the 20-point outcome of the first meeting.

The number appears to respect two competing factors: Memphis' impressive early form and Utah's situational advantage in Salt Lake City. Rather than expecting the first meeting to repeat itself, the stronger case is that the Jazz can keep Jerome from dominating the entire game and use their offensive versatility to take advantage of Memphis' short turnaround.

Best Bet: Utah Jazz -1.5 (-105)

Memphis deserves credit for three consecutive wins, and the Grizzlies are absolutely capable of winning outright if Jerome continues his remarkable start. But the timing of this rematch favors Utah. Memphis played a competitive late game in Sacramento on Sunday, then had to travel to Salt Lake City for Monday's contest. Utah also played Sunday, but at least remains on its home floor.

The Jazz should get a better offensive game from Markkanen and George than they produced in their first meeting with Memphis. Their size and spacing will demand more sustained defensive work from an already busy Grizzlies rotation. With the home side laying only 1.5 points, backing Utah to win a competitive game by a few possessions is the preferred play.

Moneyline, Spread and Total Outlook

The Utah moneyline is an alternative for bettors who would rather avoid a close spread finish, but the -1.5 offers a slightly better price at the identified number. On the total, both offenses have shown they can score quickly; the more important question is whether the second consecutive night of action reduces efficiency in the later quarters. With the market near 238 points, the spread provides the cleaner matchup angle.

Top Player Prop Matchups

Ty Jerome points: After scoring 45 against Utah and 31 at Sacramento, Jerome is drawing far more defensive attention. Utah's response to his ball screens will determine whether another high-volume scoring night is possible.

Lauri Markkanen points: His 28 points against the Lakers illustrated the matchup problem he creates away from the basket. Memphis needs to balance keeping a defender attached to him with providing help against George's penetration.

Final Prediction: Utah Jazz 122, Memphis Grizzlies 118

Projected score: Utah Jazz 122, Memphis Grizzlies 118. Best Bet: Utah Jazz -1.5 (-105).
