The Miami Heat head to Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, CA, on Sunday night to take on the Los Angeles Lakers in a cross-conference battle with the tip-off at 9:30 PM ET, and we’ve got you covered with our Heat vs. Lakers prediction.
The Heat meet the Lakers for the first time this season. They split a two-game set last season, with each team emerging victorious on the home ice. The Heat dismantled the Lakers 134-93 in Miami, while the Lakers beat the Heat 117-108 at Crypto.com Arena.
Now, let’s take a closer look at this Heat vs. Lakers prediction, one of our NBA picks for Sunday’s card.
The Heat look to get back on track
The Miami Heat (3-2; 4-1 ATS; 3-2 O/U) put an end to their three-game winning streak last Thursday. After beating the Memphis Grizzlies 146-114, the New York Knicks 115-107, and the Charlotte Hornets 144-117, the Heat suffered a 107-101 loss at the San Antonio Spurs.

Miami scored just 43 second-half points in San Antonio. The Heat shot 43.3% from the field and earned just 11 free-throw attempts while posting five offensive rebounds. Bam Adebayo led the way for Miami with a 31-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Andrew Wiggins added 24 points and six boards.
Norman Powell (24.0 PPG, 7.3 RPG) missed his second straight game due to a groin injury, and he’s questionable for Sunday’s game against the Lakers. Tyler Herro, who averaged 23.9 points and 5.5 assists last season, is still recovering from a foot injury. Herro is not expected to return any time soon.
The Lakers aim for their third straight win
The Los Angeles Lakers (4-2; 4-2 ATS; 5-1 O/U) have gone 2-1 SU and ATS in Luka Doncic’s absence, sandwiching a 122-108 home loss to the Portland Trail Blazers with a couple of road wins against the Sacramento Kings 127-120 and the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-115.
Doncic returned from a wrist injury last Friday, and the Lakers beat the Memphis Grizzlies 117-112 as 2-point road favorites. Luka went off for 44 points and 12 rebounds, while Austin Reaves accounted for 21 points. The Lakers overcame a 15-point deficit, shooting 51.3% from the field (13-for-38 from deep).
Reaves has been magnificent in Luka’s absence. He dropped 51 points on the Kings, scored 41 points against the Trail Blazers, and hit a winner against the Timberwolves, finishing the game with 28 points and 16 assists. Keep in mind that the Lakers are missing LeBron James (sciatica).
Heat vs. Lakers Pick
Spread Pick for Heat vs. Lakers
- Los Angeles Lakers (4 units)
The Heat allow 107.8 points per 100 possessions (3rd in the NBA) and 114.0 points per game (tied for 6th). Their defense will be properly tested in this matchup, given the way Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have been playing since the start of the season.
Both Doncic and Reaves love to attack the paint and get to the free-throw line. The Lakers are third in the NBA in free-throw rate (.391) and second in true shooting percentage (62.9%). I expect the Lakers to stay on track on the back of Luka and Reaves, even if Deandre Ayton (day-to-day with a back injury) doesn’t suit up.
Over/Under Pick for Heat vs. Lakers
- Over (4 units)
The Heat have been playing at a furious pace thus far, recording 105.8 possessions per 48 minutes (1st in the NBA). The Lakers register 100.2 possessions per 48 minutes (18th), and they won’t hesitate to run up and down the floor in this game.
As I noted, the Lakers love to attack the rim and get to the foul line. They are not a great 3-point shooting team (27th in 3-point percentage, 32.4%), but the Lakers lead the NBA in 2-point percentage (64.5%). Their 3-point defense has been shaky (38.1%, 25th), and the Heat make 40.5% of their shots from deep (4th). Hereof, give me the over.
