Fresh Start for Heat
The Miami Heat, one of the more consistent franchises in the league over the past two decades, took a step back last season, winning just 37 games and being throttled by the Cavs in round one. Last season was a bit chaotic, with the team moving on from star guard/forward Jimmy Butler III at the trade deadline. The Heat have now had a half-season without Butler, allowing them to make adjustments. It will be challenging to start this year as well, with last year’s leading scorer, Tyler Herro, out with an injury until November. Bam Adebayo will be the team’s go-to player in his absence, and the Heat hope to get more out of Andrew Wiggins, the key piece in the Butler trade. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has always done an excellent job of getting the most out of the talent he has in front of him.
“There’s an element of unknown with this team,” Spoelstra said this preseason. “It’s invigorated me. I’m embracing the unknown. There are some things we do know … But I think when you can also have a season where you’re not totally sure, but there are big possibilities where guys can grow. … It’s exciting.”
The Heat will have some new faces for Spoelstra to work with in 2025-26. Sharp-shooting Normal Powell comes to Miami after putting up big numbers for the Clippers last season. The team has high hopes for third-year center Kel-el Ware to continue his upward trajectory after having a strong summer and preseason. Ware nearly averaged a double-double last season after taking over as the team’s starting center. The Heat also added rookie guard Kasparas Jakucionis from Illinois in the NBA Draft. He could prove to be a versatile two-way guard for the Heat, potentially eating up minutes at the one with his ability to pass the basketball.

Magic Hope for Injury-free Season
The Orlando Magic came out of the gates hot last season and looked to be primed for a deep playoff showing. Instead, injuries to key players derailed the Magic, and they were ousted in round one. They are expected to be contenders this season in a wide-open Eastern Conference. Paola Banchero and Franz Wagner both come in healthy, and the team added another scoring option, trading for former Grizzlies’ high-scorer Desmond Bane. He should provide both Banchero and Wagner more room to operate with his ability to spread the floor. Head coach Jamahl Mosley is now tasked with trying to get the Magic past the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs for the first time since 2010.
'We talked a lot this summer of our ability to convert. And you know, you have the number two defense in the NBA. You hang your hat on the defensive end, and our ability to get out in transition was higher," Mosley said. "Our ability to convert is where we have to improve. And so being able to hang our hat on a defensive end scale, but get out and push the pace faster and transition after you get those stops, after you get those scales, after you make those turnovers. We've got to make sure we finish on the other end."
The addition of Bane should drastically improve the team’s shooting, particularly from beyond the arc. Last season, the Magic were 30th in the NBA in 3-point shooting. Bane and fellow newcomer Tyus Jones were brought in to address that issue. Jones will be important early in the season with the team still missing point guard Jalen Suggs, who is still recovering from knee surgery. They will also be without Moe Wagner, still recovering from an ACL tear last December. When healthy, this is a top-five team in the Eastern Conference. How quickly Suggs and Wagner respond to their respective knee injuries could impact the start of the Magic’s season.
Key Injuries: G Jalen Suggs and C Moritz Wagner are game-time decisions.
Heat vs. Magic Pick
Point Spread Pick for Heat at MagicÂ
- Magic -8.5 (4 units)
The two teams split the regular season series last year, 2-2. The Heat come into the season with a huge scoring issue with Herro out of the lineup. The Magic, however, revamped its scoring punch with the addition of Bane. It showed in the preseason, with the Magic scoring 120 or more points in four of their five games. Point guard Jones will be a huge piece for the team, with Suggs expected to be hampered early, possibly missing the opener. The Magic still have one of the top defenses in the NBA and now have some additional scoring that could result in more comfortable wins. I like them to jump out early this season, and that could result in some one-sided victories early until teams adjust to their updated offensive weapons.
Take Orlando -8.5
Over/Under Pick for Heat vs. MagicÂ
- Over 214.5 (4 units)
Even with both teams having injury-filled rosters and scoring issues last season, the two teams managed to go over the number in three of their four matchups. That trend should continue in the opener thanks to Orlando’s improved offense with the addition of Bane. As noted above, the Magic scored 120 or more points in four of their five preseason games. Bane and Jones will also improve a Magic 3-point game that was just 30th in the NBA last year. The Heat will be able to spread the ball to the perimeter thanks to the interior presences of both Ware and Adebayo. That should give quality long-range looks to the Heat’s shooters.
Take the over, 214.5.
