It's easy to see why Minnesota is favored. Its defense has been a serious problem for opponents, and Wednesday's 117-107 victory in Houston was another strong result. Yet Friday brings a different kind of pressure. New Orleans has followed an 0-4 start with four consecutive victories, and the Timberwolves are still learning how to construct an offense without Anthony Edwards. Giving the Pelicans a possession and a half at home is more attractive than it might have looked a week ago.

The Timberwolves' New Look Is Holding Up

Edwards is sidelined after knee surgery, with Donte DiVincenzo also out because of an Achilles issue. Terrence Shannon Jr., previously questionable, was subsequently downgraded to out with a hip problem. The depleted perimeter rotation is real, but Minnesota hasn't folded. LaMelo Ball has taken on important creation duties, Ayo Dosunmu has supplied guard minutes, and Jonathan Kuminga has given the Wolves another player who can pressure a defense with the ball.

Rudy Gobert still provides the center of gravity at the defensive end. He changes shots that never show up as blocks, and the Wolves are difficult to beat when they limit opponents to one attempt. Minnesota entered Friday among the league's most efficient defensive teams. It isn't just leaning on a famous name or a short winning streak; opponents are genuinely having trouble finding an easy route to the rim.

The concern is the other end. In a game that slows down, Minnesota can face a sequence of possessions where the first drive produces nothing and the shot clock is suddenly a problem. Ball's passing helps, as does Kuminga's ability to get downhill, but Edwards normally bends a defense in ways that can't be replaced by committee every night.

New Orleans Has Found Different Ways to Win

The Pelicans' 120-113 overtime win over Utah wasn't pretty from start to finish. They had to erase a deficit and deal with a huge Keyonte George scoring performance. But there is a certain value in learning to win games that refuse to follow the clean script. New Orleans' previous two victories both required overtime. The late-game offense has come from more than one place rather than one player taking every difficult shot.

Zion Williamson remains the obvious paint threat. Dejounte Murray gives the guards a calmer hand when the defense is already set, and Trey Murphy III was cleared to return after missing the Utah game. Herb Jones' defensive work matters at least as much as any individual scoring burst. When he is on the floor, the Pelicans can pressure a ball handler without sacrificing all their help around the rim.

Yves Missi remains out with a knee injury. That is a difficult absence against Gobert, particularly if Minnesota starts recovering its own misses. Karlo Matkovic and the Pelicans' forwards will have to make a collective job of boxing out; leaving it to one center is an invitation to repeat possessions.

Why This Matchup Could Stay Close

New Orleans must be selective about running. Fast breaks are welcome after a clean rebound, but forcing the pace straight into Minnesota's waiting defenders is not the answer. Murray can work into the middle of the floor, Williamson can attack a defense that has lost its shape, and Murphy's shooting can keep help defenders honest. If those actions produce shots without giveaways, the home side should have chances deep into the fourth.

Minnesota can spoil that plan with its rebounding and a big defensive night from Gobert. It could also get enough from Ball and Kuminga to create the cushion the oddsmakers expect. The Pelicans' own defensive flaws have not vanished during the winning streak. This is a close-game handicap, not a claim that New Orleans has suddenly become the better all-around roster.

Minnesota vs New Orleans Odds and Line Movement

Earlier public listings put Minnesota around -5.5. Later boards showed numbers nearer -4.5, while the 3:14 p.m. ET DraftKings Network reference had Minnesota -3.5 and New Orleans +3.5 at -110. The total was roughly 229.5 in earlier listings and 230.5 in the afternoon reference. Those are observations from a range of books and times, not proof that every sportsbook moved identically.

For this pick, the half-point above three is important. A two- or three-point Minnesota victory is entirely plausible, which makes +3.5 a more useful position than simply predicting who will win.

Best Bet: New Orleans Pelicans +3.5 (-110)

The Wolves' defense deserves respect, but the missing guards reduce their margin for offensive mistakes. New Orleans has a real home-floor opportunity, a deeper set of late-game scoring options than it had in October, and enough physicality to make Minnesota earn its favorite status. The danger is an ugly rebounding night for the Pelicans. If they survive that battle, I like their chances of staying within one possession.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs New Orleans Pelicans Final Score Prediction

Predicted score: Minnesota Timberwolves 115, New Orleans Pelicans 113. Minnesota edges it, New Orleans covers +3.5.
