The Timberwolves eye their third straight win
The Minnesota Timberwolves (10-5; 6-9 ATS; 8-7 O/U) have only lost one of their previous seven games overall. After stopping a four-game winning streak with a 123-112 defeat to the Denver Nuggets, the Timberwolves have won consecutive home games versus the Dallas Mavericks 120-96 and the Washington Wizards 120-109.

Last Wednesday, the Timberwolves cruised past the Wizards but failed to cover a huge 16.5-point spread. Minnesota was up 71-46 at halftime and never looked back. Julius Randle led the way with 32 points, 10 rebounds, and six assists, while Naz Reid scored 28 points off the bench.
The Timberwolves score 119.6 points per 100 possessions (4th in the NBA) and allow 113.2 points in return (tied for 11th). They are fifth in the league in 3-point percentage (38.2%). Jaden McDaniels (17.5 PPG) didn’t play against the Wizards due to a wrist injury and is questionable for Friday’s game against Phoenix.
Minnesota is 2-0 in the NBA Cup. The Timberwolves have won a couple of home games over the Utah Jazz 137-97 and the Sacramento Kings 124-110.
Key Injury Report for T-Wolves:
- F Jaden McDaniels (wrist) is questionable.
The Suns are back on track
The Phoenix Suns (9-6; 10-5 ATS; 8-7 O/U) put an end to their five-game winning streak last Sunday, suffering a 124-122 home defeat to the Atlanta Hawks. They blew a 22-point lead, allowing a whopping 47 points in the fourth quarter. Two days later, the Suns returned to winning ways with a 127-110 road victory over the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Suns held the Trail Blazers to 43.3% shooting from the field (10-for-41 from deep) and forced them into 20 turnovers. Phoenix recorded a staggering 19 steals, while six players scored points in double digits. Devin Booker and Collin Gillespie led the charge with 19 points each.
Phoenix scores 119.3 points per 100 possessions (5th in the NBA) and surrenders 114.1 points in return (15th). The Suns make 38.0% of their 3-pointers (7th). They cannot count on Jalen Green (15.5 PPG), while Grayson Allen (18.5 PPG) is questionable for Friday’s game against Minnesota. Allen is in danger of missing his third straight game with a quad injury.
The Suns are 1-0 in the NBA Cup. They beat the Utah Jazz 118-96 at home three weeks ago.
Key Injury Report for Phoenix:
- G Grayson Allen (quad) is out.
- G Jalen Green (hamstring) is out 4-6 weeks.
Timberwolves vs. Suns Pick
Spread Pick for Timberwolves vs. Suns
- Minnesota Timberwolves -3.5 (5 units)
The Suns are one of the most pleasant surprises of the season, but I expect the Timberwolves to extend their dominance in this series. Minnesota has played well of late, and the Timberwolves’ frontcourt should torture the Suns.
Phoenix’s defense has been solid thus far, but the Suns will have a tall task to contain the Timberwolves, who have scored at least 120 points in six of their previous seven outings. The Suns defend the 3-point line well, but their interior defense is far from elite level. Phoenix is 19th in the league in opposing 2-point percentage (55.6%), while Minnesota is sixth in this category (51.8%).
Over/Under Pick for Timberwolves vs. Suns
- Over 233.5 (5 units)
The Suns will live and die by the 3-point line in this game. They will struggle to cope with the T-Wolves’ frontcourt and continue to lean on 3-pointers. Phoenix is seventh in the NBA in 3-point rate (.451).
The Timberwolves are 19th in opposing 3-point percentage (36.2%). Their interior defense is pretty good, but the Timberwolves might have issues with the Suns’ 3-point shooting.
Both teams play at a steady pace, so I lean toward the over. Minnesota will attack the rim a lot and should earn plenty of free-throw attempts. The over has hit in five of the last six meetings between the Timberwolves and Suns.
