The Timberwolves look to take the next step
The Minnesota Timberwolves lost in the conference finals in each of the last two postseasons. In 2024, the Dallas Mavericks eliminated the Timberwolves in five games, while the Oklahoma City Thunder beat Minnesota in 2025, also in five games.

The Timberwolves went 49-33 this past regular season, finishing sixth in the Western Conference. They ranked eighth in the NBA in adjusted offensive efficiency (116.6 points per 100 possessions) and sixth in adjusted defensive efficiency (111.5).
In the offseason, Minnesota re-signed Naz Reid, Julius Randle, Bones Hyland, and Joe Ingles. The Timberwolves lost Nickeil Alexander-Walker, sending the 27-year-old guard to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for a second-round pick and cash considerations. Alexander-Walker averaged 9.4 points in 2024-25, appearing in all 82 regular-season games.
Randle was excellent for the Timberwolves last year, posting 18.7 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. Reid was adding 14.2 points and 6.0 boards a night, mostly off the bench, while Anthony Edwards led the charge with 27.6 points, 5.7 boards, and 4.5 assists per game. Rudy Gobert (12.0 PPG, 10.9 RPG) remains a defensive anchor at center, while PG Mike Conley (8.2 PPG, 4.5 APG) returns for his 19th NBA season.
The Trail Blazers hope to make progress
The Portland Trail Blazers haven’t been in the playoffs since 2021. Under their current head coach, Chauncey Billups, the Blazers have only won 117 games over the last four seasons. Last year, Portland went 36-46, finishing 12th in the West. The Blazers were 23rd in adjusted offensive efficiency (111.7) and 15th in adjusted defensive efficiency (114.7).
Portland will try to build on its 2024-25 campaign. It was a 15-win improvement from 2023-24. Shaedon Sharpe was tallying 18.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season, while Deni Avdija was adding 16.9 points and 7.3 boards a night. Anfernee Simmons was the leading scorer with 19.3 points per game, but the Blazers decided to trade him away in the offseason, getting Jrue Holiday in return.
Holiday won the championship with Boston in 2024. Last year, he averaged 11.1 points, 4.3 boards, and 3.9 assists with the Celtics, and his presence will be a huge boost for the Blazers’ young core. Portland signed Damian Lillard, who spent his first 11 seasons with the Blazers, but the nine-time All-Star won’t play this season due to an Achilles injury.
The Trail Blazers lost DeAndre Ayton (14.4 PPG, 10.2 RPG) in free agency, so Donovan Clingan (6.5 PPG, 7.9 RPG) will probably start at center. Point guard Scoot Henderson (12.7 PPG, 5.1 APG) won’t play against the Timberwolves due to a hamstring injury.
Timberwolves vs. Trail Blazers Pick
Spread Pick for Timberwolves vs. Trail Blazers
- Minnesota Timberwolves -4.5 (5 units)
I need to see the Trail Blazers in action before I back them in a matchup like this one. Portland beat Minnesota twice at Moda Center last season, and I expect the Timberwolves to show some pride.
The T-Wolves are legitimate championship contenders, capable of playing tough defense. Minnesota is healthy and arguably has more depth than Portland. The Trail Blazers should be able to hang around, but I expect the Timberwolves to show their quality in crunch time. Anthony Edwards and Julius Randle will make a difference down the stretch.
Over/Under Pick for Timberwolves vs. Trail Blazers
- Under 221.5 (5 units)
Last season, the Trail Blazers ranked 16th in the league in pace (98.8 possessions per 48 minutes). The Timberwolves were 24th in pace (97.3), though they ranked sixth in 3-point rate (.455) and fourth in 3-point percentage (37.7%). Portland was 17th in 3-point rate (.418) and 26th in 3-point percentage (34.2%).
The Trail Blazers know they won’t win this game on the back of their offense. Portland will try to force Minnesota into a lot of tough shots, and the Trail Blazers were third in the NBA in 3-pointers allowed per 100 possessions in 2024-25. Hereof, give me the under.
