Minnesota Sits in Sixth

The Minnesota Timberwolves are holding on to the 6th spot in the Western Conference standings, an important seed as we enter the second half of the season. Minnesota does not want to risk falling to 7th and playing in the Play-In Tournament, but Phoenix is only two games behind them in the standings. The T-Wolves might be without Naz Reid here, as the big man sat out their last game against the 76ers with a shoulder injury. In that game, Minnesota was led by Anthony Edwards with 28 points and nine rebounds in the loss.

Edwards is still only 24-years old, but is already building a strong resume in the league. He is a four time All-Star, made All-NBA Second Team twice, and was just the MVP of the All-Star Game. He is their top outside shooter with 3.4 made threes per game, and is 3rd in the entire league in scoring with 29.5 PPG. He has been hot since the All-Star Break, dropping 40 on the Mavericks then 28 on the Sixers. Julius Randle had a 41 point game the last time they took on the Blazers, and could be in for another big night here as he is averaging 22.1 PPG.

Jaden McDaniels is an athletic wing defender bringing another 14.9 PPG, while Donte DiVincenzo is a quality starter contributing 12.7 PPG and 4.2 APG. Minnesota is currently ranked 6th in offensive efficiency and 10th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. They play quickly on offense, ranking 8th in the league in possessions per game.

Trail Blazers Could be Playoff Bound

The Portland Trail Blazers seem to be ahead of schedule in their rebuild, as they are 9th in the West and should be able to hang on to their playoff spot. This is due to Memphis and Dallas trending in the opposite direction, and those teams are 11th and 12th in the conference. Portland will need to play better defense though, as they gave up 157 to Denver in their first game back after the break. More recently, Portland got a win over Phoenix behind Donovan Clingan with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

If Clingan continues to improve at this rate, the Blazers could become a real problem in the West. Clingan is a 7'2, 280 pound 22-year old who won a college championship with UConn, and is now getting 11.9 PPG and 11.5 RPG. Portland's top player this season is Deni Avdija, not many expected him to make this jump, but his All-Star spot was well deserved as he is putting up 24.4 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 6.6 APG. He has a versatile game, scoring well in transition, around the rim, and from distance. He left the Phoenix game with a back injury, so it is unclear if he will play here.

Shaedon Sharpe is a big scorer for Portland but is still out with his calf injury, and the team does not expect to see Damian Lillard all season. This puts more pressure on Jrue Holiday (15.5 PPG) and Jerami Grant (18.5 PPG) to put up bigger scoring totals. Portland is 13th in offensive efficiency and 17th in defensive efficiency. They play even faster than the T-Wolves, ranking 5th in possessions per game.

Spread pick for Timberwolves vs. Trail Blazers

  •   Minnesota to cover (5 units)

This is a buy low-sell high moment for both teams. Minnesota just got run off the floor by the 76ers, and why don't you go to YouTube and look up the Tyrese Maxey dunk he hammered on Anthony Edwards. Ant-Man is not the type of player to back down from a challenge, and he is going to want to put himself back on the right side of a highlight reel in this game. Portland just picked up a win against the Suns, but Avdija had to leave with his back issues, and Sharpe was not available to play at all. Rudy Gobert won't allow Clingan to have another big game, and Minnesota gets the win here.

Take Minnesota to win and cover.

Over/Under Pick for Timberwolves vs. Trail Blazers

  •   Over (4 units)

This game looks like a shootout in the making. Portland recently gave up 157 points to Denver, and Minnesota just allowed Philly to score 135. The defense have not been locked in, and with these two teams playing as fast as they do, this will be a high scoring showcase. Both of these teams are top ten in the league in possessions per game, and Portland has gone over in eight of their last nine games. Expect more of the same here in a high scoring, late night battle.

Take the over.
