The Timberwolves are coming off a tough loss
The Minnesota Timberwolves (10-6; 6-10 ATS; 8-8 O/U) are coming off Friday’s 114-113 road defeat against the Phoenix Suns. After a couple of home wins over the Dallas Mavericks 120-96 and the Washington Wizards 120-109, the T-Wolves blew a nice opportunity to extend their winning streak to three games.
Minnesota led Phoenix 113-105 with 1:09 left on the clock. With 12.7 seconds to go, the Timberwolves were up 113-112 when Anthony Edwards missed two free throws. The Suns scored with 6.4 seconds remaining to escape with a win.
Edwards finished the game with 41 points. Julius Randle had 20 points and five rebounds, while Rudy Gobert posted a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double. Minnesota made just 12 of its 37 shots from downtown and committed a staggering 22 turnovers.
The Timberwolves score 119.0 points per 100 possessions (7th in the NBA) and allow 113.0 points in return (8th). They are fifth in the league in 3-point percentage (37.8%). Edwards leads the way with 26.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, while Randle averages 24.7 points, 7.3 boards, and 5.8 assists.
The Kings look for another upset
The Sacramento Kings broke out of their slump last Saturday. After eight consecutive defeats (1-7 ATS), the Kings stunned the Denver Nuggets 128-123 as 11-point road underdogs.
The Kings overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit at Ball Arena in Denver. Sacramento made just 10 of its 30 shots from deep, but the Kings outscored the Nuggets 62-54 in the paint while going 22-for-23 from the foul line. The Kings posted a shiny 32/7 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Russell Westbrook and Dennis Schroder led the charge for the Kings last Saturday, accounting for 21 each. They combined for 18 assists, while DeMar DeRozan posted a line of 17 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Zach LaVine is the Kings’ leading scorer with 21.4 points per game. Domantas Sabonis posts 17.2 points and 12.3 rebounds per contest, but he’ll miss a few weeks due to a knee injury. The Kings score just 109.9 points per 100 possessions (26th in the NBA) and surrender 122.0 points in return (27th).
Key Injury Report for Kings:
C Domanta Sabonis (knee) is out 3-4 weeks.
Timberwolves vs. Kings Pick
Spread Pick for Timberwolves vs. Kings
- Minnesota Timberwolves -9 (4 units)
The Kings are coming off their best game of the season, but that’s not enough for me to take them on Monday night. The Timberwolves have dominated the Kings in their previous two encounters, and I expect more of the same.
Sacramento’s defense has been horrendous all season. The Kings are 29th in the NBA in opposing 2-point percentage (61.6%), and the Timberwolves will torture Sacramento in the paint. In that 144-117 thrashing of the King at Golden 1 Center, Minnesota scored 64 points in the paint while going 18-for-46 from beyond the arc.
Minnesota is 6-0 ATS in its last six road meetings with Sacramento. Hopefully, the Timberwolves won’t underestimate the Kings.
Over/Under Pick for Timberwolves vs. Kings
- Over 236.6 (4 units)
The Kings just stunned the Nuggets despite another bad defensive performance. Sacramento has allowed at least 123 points in five of its previous six outings, so I will take the over in this game.
The Timberwolves should torture the Kings’ defense. Minnesota has scored at least 120 points in each of its last eight victories.
Both teams prefer to play fast. Minnesota registers 101.0 possessions per 48 minutes (13th in the NBA), while Sacramento records 102.0 possessions per 48 minutes (6th). Five of their previous seven encounters have gone over the total.
