The Pelicans are slumping big-time
The New Orleans Pelicans (1-6; 3-4 ATS; 4-3 O/U) had a nice chance to finally grab their first win of the season on Tuesday night, even without Zion Williamson. They were slight favorites over the Hornets, but the Pelicans desperately need to improve on both sides of the ball. (edit: The Pels won their first game 116-112 as Trey Murphy led them with 20 points).

New Orleans allows a whopping 126.6 points per 100 possessions (29th in the NBA) and scores just 108.3 points in return (27th). The Pelicans rank 29th in the league in defensive rebound percentage (69.1%), 30th in both 2-point percentage (47.4%) and opposing 2-point percentage (66.4%).
Just four Pelicans average points in double figures, and Zion Williamson leads the way with 22.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. Jordan Poole tallies 18.3 points per game, but he’s a huge defensive liability.
The Pels miss their starting point guard Dejounte Murray (Achilles), while Zion was expected to miss Tuesday’s game against Charlotte with a hamstring injury and will miss at least a week. Center Yves Missi (illness) is considered day-to-day.
The Mavericks hope to snap a two-game skid
The Dallas Mavericks (2-5; 3-4 ATS; 2-5 O/U) are coming off Monday’s 110-102 road loss against the Houston Rockets. It was their second defeat in a row, as the Mavs suffered a 122-110 loss against the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Mexico City Game this past Saturday.
The Mavericks battled bravely against the Rockets, covering a 12.5-point spread. Dallas held Houston to 46.1% shooting from the field and allowed just eight 3-pointers, but the Mavericks lost the rebound battle 54-40. The Mavs missed Anthony Davis (calf) and Dereck Lively II (knee).
Kyrie Irving (knee) won’t be back anytime soon. Davis leads the way with 20.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game, while P.J. Washington tallies 14.9 points and 7.9 boards a night. Rookie Cooper Flagg averages 13.6 points and 6.0 boards.
The Mavericks are dead last in the NBA in adjusted offensive efficiency (104.0 points per 100 possessions) and seventh in adjusted defensive efficiency (112.0). They rank 19th in defensive rebound percentage (72.3%), 25th in 2-point percentage (52.2%), and 27th in 3-point percentage (31.6%).

I don’t want to have anything to do with the Pelicans, especially not on the second night of a back-to-back. The Mavericks’ offense has been awful so far this season, but their defense should help the team win the game and beat the number.
As I mentioned, the Pelicans have struggled on both sides of the ball thus far. Their defense has been an absolute disaster, and at times, it looks like the Pelicans don’t care. Without Williamson, the Pelicans will be in trouble, even if Anthony Davis remains on the shelf.
