The Pelicans play without rest
Saturday’s games have been excluded from the analysis, and the 3-16 New Orleans Pelicans visited the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night. The Pels hoped to bounce back from a tough 133-128 overtime defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Last Monday, the Pelicans put an end to their nine-game losing streak with a 143-130 home victory over the Chicago Bulls. New Orleans outrebounded Chicago 55-33 and posted a staggering 19 offensive boards. Zion Williamson led the way with 29 points, while Saddiq Bey had 20 points and 13 boards. Yves Missi double-doubled with 14 points and 14 rebounds, including 10 offensive boards.
Two days later, the Pelicans suffered an overtime loss against the Grizzlies, blowing a 15-point lead from halftime. Eight Pelicans scored in double digits, but it wasn’t enough. Jose Alvarado led the charge with 24 points off the bench, while Bey posted 18 points and 10 rebounds.
The Pelicans score 111.4 points per 100 possessions (26th in the NBA) and allow 122.4 points in return (28th). They are dead last in the league in opposing 2-point percentage (62.8%). The Pels are still without Dejounte Murray (Achilles), while Jordan Poole (quad), Karlo Matkovic (calf), and Trey Murphy III (elbow) are all questionable for Sunday’s game in LA.
The Lakers shoot for their seventh straight W
The Los Angeles Lakers extended their winning streak to six games last Friday, beating the Dallas Mavericks 129-119 in front of their home fans. The Lakers covered a 9.5-point spread and beat the number for the fifth time in six games.
Purple-and-Gold tortured the Mavs, shooting 59.2% from the field (18-for-35 from deep). Austin Reaves went off for 38 points, Luka Doncic had 35 points and 11 assists, and Deandre Ayton added 17 points and eight rebounds.
Marcus Smart (back) is questionable for Sunday’s clash against New Orleans, while all other guys should be ready to go. The Lakers are healthy and look unstoppable. Doncic is a legitimate MVP contender with 35.1 points, 9.4 assists, and 8.5 rebounds per game, while Reaves tallies 28.5 points and 6.7 assists per contest.
The Lakers score 119.4 points per 100 possessions (6th in the NBA) and surrender 115.5 points in return (tied for 16th). Their 2-point percentage of 62.3 is the best in the league by far.
Pelicans vs. Lakers Pick
Spread Pick for Pelicans vs. Lakers
- Los Angeles Lakers (4 units)
The Pelicans will have a mountain to climb in this game. They are on the second day of a back-to-back, and the Pels will have to deal with one of the best offensive teams in the league.
New Orleans’ defense has been awful thus far, especially in the paint. As I noted, the Pelicans’ defense is dead last in the NBA in 2-point percentage, while the Lakers lead the league in 2-point percentage.
The Lakers love to attack the paint. I expect them to dominate the Pelicans and cover a huge spread. The Lakers are 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS in their previous seven meetings with the Pels.
Over/Under Pick for Pelicans vs. Lakers
- Over (4 units)
The Lakers are not a great defensive team by any stretch of the imagination. They should be scoring at will against the Pelicans, but it’s hard to expect the Lakers to dominate New Orleans on the defensive side of the ball.
Los Angeles is 25th in the NBA in opposing 2-point percentage (56.7%) and 16th in opposing 3-point percentage (36.1%). The Pelicans should score enough to push the total over the line. Neither side plays at a fast pace, but I don’t expect a lot of defending in this game.
