Knicks' Shot-making carries the offense, but injuries are mounting

The New York Knicks are scoring an average of 120.5 points per game, while allowing 114.0. New York is shooting 48% while averaging 26.9 assists and 46.4 rebounds per game. Jalen Brunson is averaging 29.5 points and 6.4 assists per game to lead the Knicks, while playing 35.5 minutes. Karl-Anthony Towns adds 22.3 points and a team-best 11.9 rebounds per game. In the most recent game, New York beat New Orleans 130-125, with the Knicks once again winning a close game, but giving up far too many points.

The Knicks have been scoring well this season, but have started to give up too much at the defensive end, allowing opponents to remain close and forcing the Knicks into pressure situations late in games. This matchup with San Antonio will likely be high scoring as the Spurs have also produced well on the offensive end. New York has been hit hard by injuries with three regulars currently out.

Injuries: New York will play without Mitchell Robinson, Ariel Hukporti, Landry Shamet, and Josh Hart

Spurs are playing well at home, but the defense has slipped

The San Antonio Spurs are strong at home (11-4), which matters in a matchup where the teams are near-equals in several statistical categories. San Antonio scores 120.1 points per game and allows 113.6, while shooting 49% from the field with 26.2 assists and 46.0 rebounds per game. The Spurs are led by Victor Wembanyama, averaging 23.9 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game, and De’Aaron Fox adds 21.9 points and 6.1 assists per game. Stephon Castle is the assists leader at 7.0 per game.

San Antonio’s most recent game was a 113-101 home loss to Cleveland on Monday, but before that, the Spurs scored 124, 130, and 117 in three straight wins. This matchup will be determined in part by how San Antonio handles Brunson and New York’s strong offense. The Spurs match New York’s pace, and the 49% team field goal mark is strong, but San Antonio’s higher turnovers could be costly in a close game. San Antonio has an advantage in the paint on the defensive end with Wembanyama’s wingspan and rim protection.

Injuries: San Antonio does not have any players listed on its injury report

Spread Pick for New York Knicks at San Antonio Spurs

  •  New York Knicks +3 (4 Units)

New York’s recent results support taking points in a game between two 23-9 teams. The Knicks have won four of the last five and just put up 130 points in a road win at New Orleans, while San Antonio has lost two straight and scored only 101 in its latest game. The team stat comparison is basically even: New York 120.5 points per game vs San Antonio 120.1, and New York allows 114.0 vs San Antonio 113.6. With that kind of comparable stats, the +3 for New York gives the Knicks an advantage as they have shown they can win close games, including back-to-back one-possession wins over Atlanta and Cleveland before beating New Orleans.

  •  Over (5 Units)
