OKC Rolling through Early Season

The Oklahoma City Thunder finally finished the job last season, winning their franchise’s first-ever NBA Championship after winning 68 games in the regular season. This year, the Thunder are back with essentially all the same pieces and seem determined to make it two straight titles. They are now a perfect 7-0 after dismantling the New Orleans Pelicans 137-106 at home on Sunday. The Thunder swept through all four quarters, leading by 25 points at the half. Last year’s NBA MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, led the way with 30 points, including a perfect 13-of-13 from the free-throw line. The Thunder shot 56 percent from the field as a team, including 42 percent from beyond the arc.

The Thunder are a team on a mission at the outset of the season. They are 7-0 on the season and dominating key offensive and defensive statistics. They are ranked second in offensive efficiency and first in defensive efficiency. The Thunder are also very protective of the basketball, ranking second in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio. The only area of concern at this point is the team’s accuracy from beyond the arc. The Thunder are just 29th in the NBA in 3-point shooting. Given that the team is also second in rebounding, that is less of a concern at this point.

Key Injuries: G Luguentz Dort, F Ousmane Dieng, and C Chet Holmgren are game-time decisions. G Jalen Williams and G Nikola Topic are out.

Clippers Hope to Stay Unbeaten at Home

The Clippers have had an up-and-down season thus far, with a perfect 3-0 mark at home but 0-2 away from LA. The Clippers have won four of five games, including a 126-124 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night. Kawhi Leonard led the way with 30 points, and James Harden dished out 14 assists in the one-sided win. The Clippers shot 52 percent from the floor and committed just 12 turnovers.

The Clippers are looking for a return to the playoffs this season and, hopefully, improved health from all their key players. Thus far, Leonard and Harden have been available for all five games, and newcomers Bradley Beal and Chris Paul have slowly started to contribute. Beal, in particular, will be important as the season moves along as another valuable scoring option. The Clippers’ offense has flourished under Harden this season, ranked 9th in the NBA in offensive efficiency. They have not been sharp on the glass or in defensive efficiency. The Clippers are just 27th in total rebounds per game and 22nd in defensive efficiency. They’ll have to cut down on turnovers as well, ranked just 27th in the NBA through the first five games in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Key Injuries:  G Kobe Sanders and G Jordan Miller are out.

Thunder at Clippers Pick

Point Spread Pick for Thunder at Clippers

  • OKC Thunder minus the points. (4 units)

The Thunder have won seven straight games to start the season, while the Clippers are 3-2. The Thunder have been one of the most efficient teams in the NBA on both sides of the floor. They rank 2nd in offensive efficiency and first in defensive efficiency. They are far superior to the Clippers in protecting the basketball. The Thunder are second in the NBA in assist-to-turnover ratio, while the Clippers are just 27th. The Thunder also clean up the glass well, ranking 2nd in the NBA in total rebounds. The Thunder are also second in the league in scoring margin, while the Clippers are below-average, ranking just 18th. The Clippers are also playing the second leg of a back-to-back against a team that has won its last three games by an average of nearly 19 points per game. Take the Thunder minus the points.

Take Oklahoma City minus the points.

Over/Under Pick for Thunder at Clippers

  • Under (4 units)

The Thunder average over 121 points per game this season and have scored an average of 132 points per game in their last two games. Still, both teams rank in the top six in scoring defense. Another key factor, the Thunder are ranked just 29th in the league in 3-point shooting. The Thunder are also ranked first in defensive efficiency. The Clippers will be playing the second game of a back-to-back and could have weary legs, being a veteran team. This game will stay under the total.

Take the under.
