Orlando Takes European Opener

The Orlando Magic have been granted the opportunity to play two games in Europe to help the NBA reach new audiences, and they picked up a win in the first game in Germany. Orlando has now won three of their last four, and are looking to come back to the States with positive momentum if they can sweep this short series. In the first game in Germany, Orlando was led by Paolo Banchero with 26 points and 13 rebounds in the win.

Banchero is their former number one overall pick, and can make a name for himself in the league if he is able to lead the Magic to a deep playoff run. He is currently averaging 21.1 PPG and 8.8 RPG, and has the Magic ranked 5th in the tightly packed Eastern Conference. Banchero has had a double-double in three of his last four games, including a 30 point, 14 rebound game in a win over Brooklyn. Franz Wagner has been in and out of the lineup this season, but the forward is back in the lineup where he averages 22.5 PPG, and scored 18 in the first game overseas against Memphis.

Desmond Bane has been their most reliable player this season, he has played in all 41 games and is getting 19.0 PPG and 4.5 APG. The Magic are currently ranked 22nd in offensive efficiency and 13th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. Orlando plays at an average pace, ranking 16th in the league in pace of play.

Grizzlies Wait on Morant

The Memphis Grizzlies are patiently waiting to see if their star point guard will play in this showcase event, as he missed the game in Germany with a calf injury. The Memphis coaching staff is optimistic he will play, but nothing has been announced formally. Morant will likely be a game time decision here, but his recent history with the franchise has been rocky, as he has been named in trade rumors over the past several weeks.

Memphis is currently 11th in the Western Conference, but just a half game out of the final playoff spot. Morant did not play in their Berlin game, as they were led by Jaren Jackson Jr. with 30 points in the loss. If Morant plays, he brings his 19.0 PPG and 7.6 APG, but has still not improved his three point shot as he is making under one three pointer per game. Jackson Jr. has been a strong presence for the team with 18.8 PPG and 5.9 RPG, and is a quality outside shooter while shooting 37.8% from deep. Santi Aldama comes off the bench, but is listed as questionable with a calf injury he suffered in Germany.

Cedric Coward is having a strong rookie season, he is getting 14.0 PPG and 6.6 RPG as a small forward. Big man Zach Edey is still out as he is struggling with an ankle injury. The Grizzlies are 15th in offensive efficiency and 19th in defensive efficiency. Memphis plays faster than Orlando, ranking 8th in the league in pace of play.

Magic vs. Grizzlies Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for Magic vs. Grizzlies

  • Magic -4.5 (5 units)

The Orlando Magic are getting healthier, just as Memphis is slowly starting to unravel. The Magic have Banchero and Franz Wagner both on the floor, while Desmond Bane has not missed a game all season. Meanwhile the Grizzlies just lost their last game against Orlando without Morant on the floor, and might not have him here as he is battling his calf injury. NBA training staffs have been conservative with calf injuries lately, as it can lead to issues with the Achilles, which could end seasons. If the Grizzlies have to play with Jackson Jr. as their best player, he will not be able to hang with Banchero and Wagner, and the Magic will win and cover again in Europe.

Take the Magic to cover.

Over/Under Pick for Magic vs. Grizzlies

  • Under 231.5 (4 units)

These teams are playing their second straight game in Europe, they cannot be expected to be on top of their game. For many of these young players, it could be their first time overseas, which means they will not be spending their time resting and getting treatment. This game could be sloppy, and Memphis is running out of players as Edey is out, and Morant and Aldama could miss this one as well. Orlando has an advantage in the frontcourt, and will be willing to play slow while capitalizing in the paint. Expect a low scoring game here.

Take the under.
