Indiana will rely on its returning core this season

Indiana (0-1 SU, 1-0 ATS, and 1-0 O/U) lost 141-135 to Oklahoma City in a rematch of last season's NBA Finals on Thursday. The double-overtime thriller was a back-and-forth affair, as neither team led by double digits. Guard Bennedict Mathurin had 36 points and 11 rebounds, and forward Pascal Siakam added 32 points and 15 rebounds for the Pacers, who shot 43.8 percent from the field. Both teams struggled from three-point range, but combined for over 100 points in the paint and nearly 100 free-throw attempts. Reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 55 points for the visiting Thunder.

Indiana went 50-32 last season, finishing fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. The Pacers reached the conference finals two seasons ago but made it a step further in 2024-25, falling in seven games to OKC. They completed several rousing comebacks along the way, as guard Tyrese Haliburton hit several shots that will go down in playoff history. Still, the result left a sour taste in Pacers fans' mouths, as the team finished one win away from their first NBA championship and lost Haliburton to an Achilles injury in Game 7 that will sideline him for all of 2025-26.

Hali isn't the only star the Pacers will play without this season, either. All-Star center Myles Turner signed with Milwaukee in free agency, leaving a gaping hole inside. Indy added Jay Huff and re-signed Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman, but the career backups have big shoes to fill. While replacing Haliburton is impossible, guards Andrew Nembhard and T.J. McConnell will do a fine job picking up the slack. That said, considering that they didn't make any significant splashes in the draft or free agency, Indiana appears a step behind last season's pace.

Indiana Pacers Basketball Injury Report: PG T.J. McConnell is out. SG Andrew Nembhard (shoulder) and C Isaiah Jackson (hamstring) are day-to-day.

Grizzlies need a full season from Ja Morant

Memphis (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS, and 1-0 O/U) held off New Orleans in its season opener, as guard Ja Morant poured in 35 points, including a key bucket with 35 seconds remaining to seal the 128-122 victory. Michigan State product Jaren Jackson Jr. also added 18 points and six blocks for the Grizzlies, who shot 51 percent from the field and knocked down 35 free throws. The Pelicans, who led by as many as 15, won the rebounding battle (+8 margin with 17 offensive rebounds) and scored 66 points in the paint, but came out flat after halftime. Memphis outscored New Orleans 41-22 in the third and held off the Pelicans' rally attempts in the final quarter.

The Grizzlies were 48-34 last season, finishing eighth in the NBA's Western Conference. They ranked second in the league in scoring (121.7 PPG), just 0.2 points off the lead. Morant (23.2), Jackson Jr. (22.2), and Desmond Bane (19.2) led the charge, and six others averaged between 8 and 12 points. Unfortunately for fans, Memphis lost its momentum down the stretch, dropping 10 of its final 16 games. The poor play led to the firing of head coach Taylor Jenkins, but the move didn't inspire change, as the Grizz were swept out of the playoffs in the first round by the Thunder.

Memphis lost Bane to Orlando in free agency, but made several intriguing moves that should boost the team's depth. Resigning Jackson Jr. was the team's top priority, especially after Bane's departure, and the additions of two-time champion Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and three-point threat Ty Jerome bring stability to the backcourt. The Grizzlies also traded for forward Cedric Coward, the 11th overall pick in the draft, who showed off a fluid three-point stroke, high motor, and rebounding prowess in college. At the end of the day, Memphis' season rests on the shoulders of Morant. The 26-year-old is one of the league's elite scorers and playmakers, but has missed too much time due to injuries and off-the-court issues.

Memphis Grizzlies Basketball Injury Report: PG Ja Morant (ankle) and SG Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (ankle) are day-to-day.

Spread Pick for Pacers vs. Grizzlies

  • Memphis covers (5 Units)

Back-to-backs can be brutal in the NBA, but not in the first week of the season. I'm confident Memphis will be competitive at home on Saturday. Indiana, meanwhile, is coming off a double-OT loss in a Finals rematch vs the Thunder and is without several key players from last season's team. McConnell will be out for a month, Jackson didn't suit up for Thursday's game, and Nembhard exited in the second half with shoulder soreness. With Haliburton out and Turner playing for the Bucks, that's a lot of production that's either unavailable or questionable to be available for Saturday's game. Memphis held off New Orleans in its first game despite the Pelicans' advantages on the boards and in the paint. The Pacers' frontcourt isn't as formidable, though, and the Grizzlies have more than enough offensive firepower.

Bet on the home team to cover on Saturday!

Over/Under Pick for Pacers vs. Grizzlies

  • Over (5 Units)

Memphis led the NBA in pace last season (106.9 possessions per game) and won't slow down this season. Indiana is also off to a fast start after ranking eighth in possessions per game last season. These teams ranked fifth (Memphis) and ninth (Indiana) in offensive rating in 2024-25, with high shooting percentages both at the rim and beyond the arc. The Pacers aren't fully healthy, but they had Friday off and are eager to rebound from their season-opening loss. The Grizzlies should also score plenty of points against an Indy defense that was 16th in defensive rating last season and lost an elite rim protector in Turner from that team.

Bettors should anticipate a high-scoring game played at breakneck pace on Saturday.
