Pacers are in a freefall
Indiana (1-12 SU, 5-8 ATS, and 4-9 O/U) lost 129-111 to Toronto on Saturday. The Pacers are led by F Pascal Siakam, who averages 24.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 5.3 dimes per game. They score 108.5 points per game (29th) on 39.9 percent shooting (30th), and hold their opponents to 122.8 points per game (23rd) on 47.9 percent shooting (23rd).
Indiana went 50-32 last season, finishing fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. The Pacers reached the conference finals two seasons ago but made it a step further in 2024-25, falling in seven games to OKC. They completed several rousing comebacks along the way, as guard Tyrese Haliburton hit several shots that will go down in playoff history. Still, the result left a sour taste in Pacers fans' mouths, as the team finished one win away from their first NBA championship and lost Haliburton to an Achilles injury in Game 7 that will sideline him for all of 2025-26.
Hali isn't the only star the Pacers will play without this season, either. All-Star center Myles Turner signed with Milwaukee in free agency, leaving a gaping hole inside. Indy added Jay Huff and re-signed Isaiah Jackson and James Wiseman, but the career backups have big shoes to fill. While replacing Haliburton is impossible, guards Andrew Nembhard and T.J. McConnell will do a fine job picking up the slack. That said, considering that they didn't make any significant splashes in the draft or free agency, Indiana appears a step behind last season's pace.
Indiana Pacers Basketball Injury Report: F Bennedict Mathurin (foot) and SG Aaron Nesmith (knee) are questionable for Monday's game against the Pistons.
Detroit is a defensive juggernaut
Detroit (11-2 SU, 9-4 ATS, and 6-7 O/U) beat Philadelphia 114-105 on Friday. The Pistons are led by G Cade Cunningham, who averages 27.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 9.9 assists per game. They score 118.2 points per game (17th) on 47.2 percent shooting (14th), and hold their opponents to 112.2 points per game (4th) on 43.8 percent shooting (3rd).
The Pistons went 44-38 last season, finishing sixth in the East. They lost in seven games in the first round of the playoffs to New York, but it was a tremendous turnaround campaign, as they went from the worst team in the league to clinching a playoff spot. With Cunningham fresh off his first All-Star nomination and a well-structured core around him, the Pistons are a team no one wants to play in the postseason.
Detroit didn't make any major splashes in free agency during the offseason, but the signing of forward Duncan Robinson was impactful. The veteran sharpshooter has filled in nicely for Malik Beasley, hitting 43.3 percent of treys in his first season in The D. He and fellow Michigan alum Caris LeVert (9.6 PPG and 3.0 APG) have solidified the Pistons' backcourt. While young and less experienced than some of the East's top teams, Detroit is brimming with upside. Don't count them out this season.
Detroit Pistons Basketball Injury Report: Cunningham (hip), C Jalen Duren (ankle), and SF Ausar Thompson (ankle) are day-to-day.
Pacers vs. Pistons Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Pacers vs. Pistons
- Detroit -9.5 (5 Units)
The Pistons are a top-notch defensive squad, ranking 3rd in eFG%, third in rim defense, and third in 2PT%. The Pacers have failed to cover recently as six-point dogs against Toronto, 13-point underdogs against Golden State, and as nine-point dogs against Denver. Indiana prefers a high-tempo approach, with Nesmith leading the push, but Detroit is the kind of team that can disrupt that style. The Pistons are physical, strong on the interior, and slower-paced. They have rim protectors and plenty of length on the perimeter, creating problems for the Pacers' half-court offense. On the other end of the court, they will attack the rim (1st in rim%) against an Indiana defense ranked 27th in opponent rim FG%. The Pacers also allow the most free-throw attempts in the NBA and rarely cause turnovers.
Over/Under Pick for Pacers vs. Pistons
- Under 229 (4 Units)
Indiana (10th in pace) will push the tempo, but with Mathurin (31 PPG in two games) still potentially sidelined, the Pacers are without one of their top scoring options, and for a team already missing its superstar Haliburton, that's not ideal. Indy has been tough to watch offensively recently, scoring 103 or fewer points in four of its last six games, and won't fare better tomorrow against the Pistons' solid defense. Detroit has been below-average offensively, ranking 19th in eFG%, 24th in rim, and 18th in 3PT%. Indiana, 4th in 3PT%, is still stout on the perimeter and will lock in to keep the score close.
