Pelicans are banged-up ahead of Monday's game
New Orleans (2-7 SU, 4-4-1 ATS, and 5-4 O/U) lost 126-119 to San Antonio on Saturday, snapping its two-game losing streak. The Pelicans trailed by as many as 19 points and never led, as the Spurs shot 53 percent from the floor with 62 points in the paint. NOLA held its own on the glass and shot the basketball well from beyond the arc (15-for-38), but only scored 22 points in the first quarter and was unable to come back.

The Pels were 21-61 last season, finishing 14th in the West and missing the NBA Playoffs. Injuries limited them, as Zion Williamson (52 games), Dejounte Murray (51), Trey Murphy III (29), and CJ McCollum (26) all missed extended time. New Orleans ranked in the bottom five of the league in both offensive and defensive rating. In the midst of a forgettable season, the front office traded Brandon Ingram and sent McCollum to Washington for Jordan Poole over the summer.
New Orleans has a mix of veterans and young talent on its roster. Three-time champion Kevon Looney was signed in free agency to bring stability to the frontcourt rotation, and forward Saddiq Bey was acquired via trade. The Pelicans also made a couple of nice moves on draft night, selecting Oklahoma guard Jeremiah Fears and Maryland forward Derik Queen with the 7th and 13th picks. Fears is a slashing combo guard with upside (13.8 PPG and 3.2 APG), and he has been thrown into the fire with Dejounte Murray rehabbing from a torn Achilles suffered in January. All that said, Zion Williamson is still the centerpiece of New Orleans' team. He's still only 25 and has proven to be an elite rebounder and post scorer when healthy. With fellow 25-year-old forward Trey Murphy III (21.2 PPG last season) at his side, the Pelicans have a frontcourt worth building around.
New Orleans Pelicans Key Injury Report:Β
- Williamson (hamstring) is out
- Poole (quad) is out.
After a slow start, Phoenix has won four of five
Phoenix (5-5 SU, 5-4-1 ATS, and 5-5 O/U) beat the LA Clippers in consecutive games on Thursday and Saturday. The Clippers shot 53 percent in Saturday's loss, but they were inefficient from beyond the arc (10-for-33). The Suns dominated on the glass (42-27 rebounding edge) and shared the basketball, assisting on 30 of their 40 made field goals.
The Suns were 36-46 last season, finishing 11th in the West and missing the playoffs. They had plenty of star power with Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal, but that group was rarely on the court at the same time (23 starts together). Phoenix was especially weak defensively, ranking 27th in defensive rating, perΒ Dunks and Threes. A Play-In tourney berth was still up for grabs late in the season, but the team went 1-9 in their final ten games, prompting the dismissal of head coach Mike Budenholzer.
Phoenix made numerous changes this offseason, most notably waiving Beal and trading Durant to Houston. In total, eight players were allowed to leave. The Suns acquired Rockets starters Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks for KD, along with the tenth pick in the draft, which they used to select Duke center Khaman Maluach. They also acquired Charlotte center Mark Williams, who will slot into the starting lineup this season. The net result is a squad that's bigger, younger, more athletic, and stronger defensively. Still, the competition in the West is fierce and the Suns' schedule is unforgiving, making a deep run in the postseason unlikely for Phoenix.
Phoenix Suns Key Injury Report:Β
G Jalen Green (hamstring) is out.
Pelicans vs. Suns Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Pelicans vs. Suns
- Suns -7.5 (5 Units)
Phoenix is trending in the right direction and is much healthier than New Orleans. I'm concerned about the Pelicans' lack of scoring options with Poole and Williamson out, especially inside the paint. As it is, they're last in the league in rim shooting percentage. The Suns, meanwhile, are top ten in Rim% and 3PT%. I also expect the home team to generate second-chance scoring opportunities on the glass. They rank 9th in offensive rebounding rate, and the visitors have allowed too many offensive rebounds (27th in opponent OR%).
Phoenix has more star power and depth than New Orleans right now. Bet on the Suns to win comfortably on Monday.
Over/Under Pick for Pelicans vs. Suns
- Under 229 (5 Units)
New Orleans and Phoenix prefer a slow-tempo style of play, ranking 25th and 20th in pace, respectively. The Suns average the longest defensive possession length in the NBA. While they are higher tempo on offense, the Pels (23rd in average defensive possession length) will do their best to slow them down. The Suns will score enough to cover, but they're unlikely to put a lot of points on the board. They rank 22nd in offensive rating, 29th in free-throw attempt rate, and 20th in turnover percentage. I'm also concerned about the Pelicans' offense in this game. They rank 29th in two-point percentage, and Phoenix ranks just outside the top ten in three-point defense.
The under is 5-1 in Phoenix's last six games and has covered in two of New Orleans' last three. I recommend betting on that outcome in Monday's game.
