Philadelphia Wins Four of Five

The Philadelphia 76ers are gaining steam in the Eastern Conference as they head into this matchup with Orlando. The Sixers have won four of their last five, including wins on the road over the Grizzlies, Mavericks and Knicks, and a home victory over the Wizards. Their lone loss in the stretch came against the Nuggets in a high scoring 125-124 shootout. Philly is now 5th in the Eastern Conference, seven games behind the division leading Pistons. In their last game, Philly got 28 points from Joel Embiid in the win over Washington.

Embiid is no longer in MVP conversations, as he has been over the past five years, including the 2023 season where he took home the award. He has played in 18 games this season, but is still productive as he is getting 23.6 PPG and 6.9 RPG in his minutes on the floor. The franchise is now led by Tyrese Maxey, as the 25-year old guard is 3rd in the league in scoring with 30.7 PPG, and is 10th in the league with 7.1 APG. Maxey has scored 22 or more in each of his last seven games. Paul George had 23 points in their win over the Wizards, the veteran wing is averaging 15.8 PPG on the year.

VJ Edgecombe is their rookie guard, he was drafted 3rd overall in the past draft, and is averaging 16.4 PPG to go with his 5.4 RPG and 4.2 APG. Kelly Oubre Jr. has been coming off the bench recently while adding 15.6 PPG. The 76ers are 9th in the league in offensive efficiency and 11th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. Philadelphia ranks 11th in the league in possessions per game.

Magic Top the Southeast

The Orlando Magic are at the top of the Southeast Division standings, holding a narrow half game lead over the Miami Heat behind them. This puts the, 6th in the Eastern Conference standings, where they are also a half game behind this Philadelphia team. Orlando is coming off a tough battle against Brooklyn, where the team needed a buzzer beating three pointer from Paolo Banchero to leave with a win.

Banchero is a star in the league, and is still just 23-years old while averaging 21.1 PPG, 8.6 RPG and 4.7 APG. He is a 6'10, 250-pound forward, but can handle the ball like a guard and is continuing to improve his three point shot. He is paired up with Franz Wagner as their big time scoring duo on the wing, but Wagner will miss this game with an ankle injury. This leaves Desmond Bane as their next top scorer, the former Memphis player is getting 18.9 PPG while adding an outside shooting threat to the lineup. Anthony Black is a 21-year old guard getting more minutes as he is scoring 15.3 PPG in his 3rd season in the league.

Wendell Carter Jr. starts in the paint where he averages 12.4 PPG and 7.7 RPG, while Tristan da Silva will see minutes here as he is getting another 9.6 PPG as a 24-year old wing. Orlando ranks 25th in the league in offensive efficiency and 13th in the league in defensive efficiency. The Magic play slightly slower than the 76ers, ranking 17th in the league in pace of play.

76ers vs. Magic Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for 76ers vs. Magic

  • 76ers to cover (5 units)

Injuries play a big role in the NBA regular season, and just as the 76ers are getting healthy, the Magic have been dealt a big blow to their starting lineup. Franz Wagner will miss this game, and while he is not a household name, he is the top scorer for Orlando and also plays an important role on the defensive end with his versatility. The team has already been dealing with the injury to Jalen Suggs, leaving the team without important scoring options coming into this one. Banchero is available, but Philly can throw Oubre and George at him, while allowing Embiid to protect the basket. Embiid is still productive, and when he is healthy he is far superior than any big on the Magic. Philly gets the cover here.

Take the 76ers to cover.

Over/Under Pick for 76ers vs. Magic

  •    Under (4 units)

Neither of these teams play fast at a consistent rate, as they are both outside the top ten in the league in possessions per game. These analytics can be difficult to interpret, specifically for the 76ers who will play at a different pace with Embiid in the game. Instead of flying up and down the floor, Philly will try to keep Embiid involved in the offense, which will lead to longer possessions. Orlando is short two of their top scorers with Wagner and Suggs out, they will be more willing to play at a slow pace to try to keep this game close. Expect a tightly contested matchup here that sees the defenses rise to the occasion, this will not go over the number.

Take the under.
