The Suns have a new look
The Phoenix Suns started their 2025-26 campaign last Wednesday. They outlasted the Sacramento Kings 120-116, covering a 3.5-point spread in front of the home fans. The Suns overcame a 20-point deficit despite going just 10-for-34 from beyond the 3-point line.
Phoenix outrebounded Sacramento 51-37 on the night while posting a staggering 18 offensive rebounds. The Suns outscored the Kings 64-54 in the paint and went 20-for-28 from the foul line, while Sacramento missed 10 of its 23 free-throw attempts.
Devin Booker led the charge for the Suns with 31 points. Grayson Allen amassed 18 points, seven assists, and five rebounds, while Dillon Brooks notched 22 points in his Suns debut. Brooks arrived in the Kevin Durant trade along with Jalen Green, who’s sidelined with a hamstring injury.
In the offseason, the Suns decided to part ways with both Durant and Bradley Beal. Unfortunately, they had to waive Beal, who’ll get a ton of money from the Suns in the next five years. The Suns also have a new head coach in Jordan Ott, who’s been an assistant coach with the Nets, Lakers, and Cavaliers throughout his career.
The Nuggets are coming off a heartbreaking loss
The Denver Nuggets opened the season with a 137-131 overtime defeat at the Golden State Warriors. The Nuggets blew a 14-point lead and failed to cover, playing as slight 1.5-point road underdogs. They had a seven-point lead with 3:50 left to play in the fourth quarter.
The Nuggets shot 53.7% from the field. They went 16-for-40 from beyond the arc and 13-for-14 from the foul line. However, the Nuggets’ defense was pretty bad. Denver allowed 18 3-pointers and forced just nine turnovers.
Aaron Gordon led the way for the Nuggets with a career-high 50 points. He went 10-for-11 from downtown and 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Nikola Jokic posted a triple-double of 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists, while Jamal Murray double-doubled with 25 points and 10 assists.
Cameron Johnson was a huge disappointment in his Nuggets debut. He had just five points and three rebounds in 32 minutes on the floor. Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jonas Valanciunas played their first minutes in the Nuggets uniform, too. Hardaway Jr. had 10 points, while Valanciunas tallied eight points and three boards.
Suns vs. Nuggets Pick
Spread Pick for Suns vs. Nuggets
- Denver Nuggets (4 units)
The Nuggets must be angry following that overtime loss in their season opener. It was a tough matchup for the Nuggets, and I expect them to bounce back when the Suns come to town. Denver needs to improve on the defensive end, but the Nuggets’ offense will be too much for the Suns, who are not a great defensive team by any stretch of the imagination.
This is a tough spot for the Suns, who will have to deal with fatigue on the second night of a back-to-back. Playing at a high altitude in Denver won’t help, so I will lay points with the Nuggets.
Over/Under Pick for Suns vs. Nuggets
- Over (4 units)
Last season, the Nuggets ranked ninth in the NBA in pace (99.8 possessions per 48 minutes), while the Suns were 25th in this category (97.1). Both teams struggled to defend, especially the Suns, who ranked 28th in adjusted defensive efficiency (119.3 points per 100 possessions).
I don’t expect these two teams to improve a lot early in the new season. The Nuggets didn’t play fast against the Warriors, but both clubs executed at a high level on the offensive side of the ball. I’m looking for a high-scoring affair at Ball Arena on Saturday night.
