We have a big Western Conference matchup in Texas in this Suns vs. Rockets prediction. Phoenix has been a surprising 13-9 (14-7-1 ATS) after beating the Lakers on the road on Dec. 1, 125-108. The Rockets (14-5, 13-6 ATS) are performing pretty much as expected, though some felt they may drop after the off-season injury to point guard Fred VanVleet, who tore his ACL. These two teams last met on Nov. 24 with the Rockets winning 114-92 on the road as a 6.5-point favorite. Houston is a 9.5-point favorite, and the total is 222. Suns upset Lakers

It's too early to look at the standings, but the Suns are seventh in the West at 13-9 and in a very tough conference led by OKC at 21-1 and the Lakers are second (15-5). This was a great win considering Devin Booker (groin) is now out for at least a week and G Grayson Allen has been out due to an illness. Booker played just 10 minutes against the Lakers, scoring 11 points and dishing out three assists. Yes, the Suns found a way thanks to Dillon Brooks' 33 points and Collin Gillespie's career-high 28 points. The win by Phoenix snapped a seven-game winning streak by the LA Lakers.

The Suns' roster will now be tested with Booker out for a few games. Gillespie, a 6-1 guard from Villanova, who has played in just 79 games in his two+ year career, is averaging 13.4 points and 5.0 assists in 26.8 minutes, mainly as a reserve. He's also shooting 44.2% from beyond the arc and has 1.2 steals per game. Allen is averaging 17.9 points and 4.2 assists, but hasn't played since Nov. 29. He also had a career-high 42 points on 12-of-17 shooting (10-of-15 3pt). on Nov. 10 against the Pelicans. Guard Jaaree Bouyea, a 26-year-old guard from San Francisco, will also get more time. He's averaging 6 points and is shooting 61% from the field. He had seven points and dished out five assists in 23 minutes against the Lakers.

Phoenix ranks 16th overall on DunksandThrees.com, 13th in Adjusted Offense and 14th in Adjusted Defense.

Key Injuries for Suns:

  • G Devin Booker (groin) is out 1-2 weeks. Leading scorer
  • G Grayson Allen (illness) is questionable. Avg 17.9 points.

Rockets are a team to reckon with

Ime Udoka is on a short list for Coach of the Year in the first quarter of the NBA season. J.B. Bickerstaff (+275) is the favorite at BetMGM and Idoka is the seventh favorite at +1600, tied with J.J. Redick of the Lakers. This Rockets' team is very talented and they added future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant, but Idoka makes this team play defense. That happened on Wednesday, when they demolished Sacramento, 121-95 as a 15.5-point favorite. Houston held the Kings to 41% shooting and 29% (10-of-34) from long range. Center Alperen Sengun led the Rockets with 28 points, 10 rebounds and four steals. Durant chipped in with 24 points and eight assists.

The Rockets are not injury-riddled as the Suns, but Tari Eason (6-8, 215), who averages 11.5 points and 5.2 rebounds, has played in just 11 of their 19 games. He's dealing with an oblique injury and is out. Durant is still an incredible player and a great pickup, who averages 25 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Sengun is playing at an All-Star level with 23.1 points, 9.1 rebounds and 7.1 assists.

The Rockets are ranked second on DunksandThrees.com, second in Adjusted Offensive Rating and second in Adjusted Defense. They also rank first in the NBA in total rebound rate.

Key Injuries for Rockets:

  • F T. Eason (oblique) is out. Avg 11.5ppg, 5.2rpg

Phoenix:

  • 11-3 ATS last 14 games.
  • 1-6 ATS last 7 against Houston.

Houston:

  • 4-1 ATS last 5 games.
  • 6-1 Under last 7 games.

Spread Pick for Suns vs. Rockets

Suns vs. Rockets pick and prediction

  • Houston -9.5 (5 units)

I love the gumption of the Suns, but you can't tell me that Connor Gillespie and Jamaree Bouyea are going to help them compete in this game, assuming both start (if Allen is out). Houston is just too talented with Grant and Sengun up front, but you add Amen Thompson's length and athleticism on the defensive side, and this is going to get ugly. Houston has won five straight and covered four of five in this series. Take the Rockets.

Total Pick for Suns vs. Rockets

  • Under 222 (4 units)

I don't think Phoenix breaks 100 in this game. Booker is a huge loss because he could score in a variety of ways and was also their point guard. When it comes to pace, Houston wants to slow it down because Sengun is a half-court player and Durant is 37. Phoenix is 21st in pace of play and with Booker out, they are going to need to slow it down to have a chance.
