The Suns look to snap a two-game skid

The Phoenix Suns have dropped three of their previous four games overall. After a 114-92 defeat to the Houston Rockets and a 112-100 victory at the Sacramento Kings, the Suns lost consecutive games against the Oklahoma City Thunder 123-119 on the road and the Denver Nuggets 130-112 at home.

It was a tough back-to-back set for the Suns, who fought bravely against the mighty Thunder last Friday. Phoenix outrebounded OKC 51-37, allowing just three offensive rebounds to the reigning NBA champs, but the Suns committed 10 more turnovers than their rivals (20-10).

The Suns committed just seven turnovers on Saturday, but they didn’t have enough fuel to compete against the Nuggets, who were scoring at will. Denver went 22-for-38 from downtown, while Phoenix hit 14 of its 42 shots from beyond the arc.

Grayson Allen (quad) returned from a seven-game absence last Saturday, scoring 10 points in 26 minutes on the floor. Dillon Brooks dropped 27 points on Denver, while Devon Booker had 24 points and seven assists. The Suns are still without Jalen Green (hamstring).

The Lakers lean on their offense

The Los Angeles Lakers searched for their seventh straight victory on Sunday night. They were listed as 14.5-point favorites. The Lakers have been unstoppable lately, and since LeBron James (sciatica) made his season debut, Los Angeles has beaten the Dallas Mavericks 129-119, the LA Clippers 135-118, and the Utah Jazz twice, 140-126 and 108-106.

Last Friday, Austin Reaves dropped 38 points on the Mavericks, while Luka Doncic went off for 35 points and 11 assists. The Lakers went 18-for-35 from beyond the 3-point line while outscoring the Mavericks 52-42 in the paint.

LeBron was ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Pelicans due to a foot injury, but he should be ready to play against the Suns on the back end of a back-to-back set. Marcus Smart (back) was doubtful for Sunday night.

Thanks to Doncic (35.1 PPG, 9.4 APG) and Reaves (28.5 PPG, 6.7 APG), the Lakers’ offense is one of the best in the league. Los Angeles tallies 119.4 points per 100 possessions (6th in the NBA) on 62.3% shooting from inside the arc (1st) and 34.9% from downtown (21st).

Spread Pick for Suns vs. Lakers

  • Phoenix Suns (4 units)

Mark Williams (calf) missed the Suns’ defeat against the Nuggets. It was on the second day of a back-to-back set, so I expect Williams to play against the Lakers. He’s grabbed 41 rebounds over his previous three appearances, and the Suns are a much better team with Williams in the lineup.

Phoenix desperately needs Williams back on the floor against the Lakers, who love to attack the paint. The Suns will be more aggressive on the defensive side of the ball than they were against the Nuggets, and I expect them to keep it close. Phoenix is 13th in the league in adjusted defensive efficiency (114.6 points per 100 possessions) and 16th in opposing 2-point percentage (54.9%).

With Grayson Allen back from his injury, the Suns have one more dangerous weapon to use against the Lakers’ shaky defense, which ranks 25th in 2-point percentage (56.7%) and 15th in 3-point percentage (36.1%). Keep tracking the injury report because the Lakers might decide to rest Luka Doncic or Austin Reaves.

Over/Under Pick for Suns vs. Lakers

  • Under (4 units)

The Suns need to slow things down as much as possible and try to force the Lakers into a lot of tough shots. Phoenix has to play tough, aggressive defense, or the Suns will be in trouble. They register 98.9 possessions per 48 minutes (24th in the NBA) despite posting the fourth-highest offensive rebound percentage (30.4%).

The Lakers record 99.6 possessions per 48 minutes (18th), and they will have to deal with fatigue on the second night of a back-to-back. Both teams are turnover-prone, so I will take the under. Six of the last seven encounters between the Suns and Lakers have gone under the total.
