Phoenix Wins Five of Six

The Phoenix Suns are one of the best kept secrets in basketball, Kevin Durant is long gone from his tenure in the desert, but the team has won five of their last six, and is the best team in the NBA against the spread. Their recent stretch included strong wins over the Thunder and Knicks, while also knocking off the Kings, Grizzlies and Wizards. Their only loss in the recent stretch came on the road against Houston where they lost by just three. Phoenix is currently 6th in the Western Conference standings. In their most recent game, the Suns were led by Royce O'Neale with 19 points in the win over Washington.

O'Neale has been a role player in the league for the past nine seasons, bouncing around the league as he played for Utah and Brooklyn before landing in Phoenix. He has been in the starting lineup recently and is getting 10.5 PPG and 5.1 RPG, while being an above average defender who is making 2.9 threes per game. Devin Booker is the top scorer on the team, he has been to the Finals with Phoenix, and survived the Durant era, and continues to put up numbers as he is averaging 25.3 PPG and 6.4 APG. Booker has cooled off from deep this season, making just 1.7 threes per game on 30.6% shooting from the outside. Dillon Brooks has increased his scoring this year, he is up to 21.2 PPG this year after scoring just 14.0 last year. Brooks is a physical defender who can get in opponents' heads.

Jalen Green is still out of the lineup with a hamstring injury. Mark Williams adds another 12.3 PPG and 8.1 RPG as their starting center, with Collin Gillespie running the point and getting 13.2 PPG. The Suns rank 12th in offensive efficiency and 7th in defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. Phoenix plays at a slow pace, ranking just 23rd in the league in possessions per game.

Heat are Cooling Down

The Miami Heat are looking for a bounce back game, as they have lost each of their last three coming into this matchup with the Suns. Their losses all came on the road, as they went down to Minnesota, Indiana and Oklahoma City in consecutive games. They are currently sitting in 8th in the East, a similar spot as the franchise has been stuck in the Play-In Tournament multiple times over the past several seasons. In their most recent game, Andrew Wiggins had 23 points in the loss to Oklahoma City.

Wiggins has gone from number one overall pick, to really solid veteran player for the Heat throughout his career. The 30-year old wing has been putting up strong scoring numbers throughout his career, as he has been averaging 16.0 PPG or more his entire career, starting back in 2014-15. This season Wiggins is at 16 PPG as a starter, while still grabbing 4.8 RPG. Norman Powell did not play against the Thunder, as he has been dealing with a back injury. He is listed as a game-time decision here, but if he goes he is the top scorer on the team with 23.8 PPG. Tyler Herro is finally healthy, he has only played in nine games this season but is slated to play here with his 21.8 PPG and 5.3 RPG.

Bam Adebayo has been the starting center for the Heat since 2019, he is getting 16.4 PPG and 9.7 RPG as an undersized big standing just 6'9 while battling 7-footers. Jaime Jaquez Jr. will make a run at Sixth Man of the Year, he is getting 15.9 PPG off the bench. The Heat rank 19th in the league in offensive efficiency and 6th in defensive efficiency. Miami plays at the fastest pace in the league, ranking first in possessions per game.

Suns vs. Heat Picks and Predictions

Spread pick for Suns vs. Heat

  • Suns to cover (5 units)

The Suns have been a great value bet all season, as they are the best team in the league against the spread. The Suns are covering 71.8% of their games, which is an absurdly high number, as Philly ranks second in the league with a 59.5% cover rate. This is likely due to bettors thinking the Suns would get worse with Durant off the roster, but Phoenix has been making it work with Booker, Brooks and company. The Heat have Tyler Herro back, but that might not be a good thing, the team has lost in each of their last five games when Herro has been on the floor. Norman Powell is still bugged by a back injury, making this look more and more like a Phoenix cover.

Take the Suns to cover

Over/Under Pick for Suns vs. Heat

  • Β  Β Over (4 units)

Miami plays fast, and they will play fast again here against a team that does not have an elite level rim protector. The Heat lead the NBA in possessions per game, they push the tempo, especially because their bigs typically do not score in back to the basket type post ups. Adebayo has improved his jumped, and is an opportunistic finisher around the rim, while Kel'El Ware is an athlete who wants to dunk anything he can. Phoenix will match this pace, and with Booker and Gillespie on the floor they have enough ballhandling to create efficient and fast possessions. Expect this game to fly over the number.

Take the over.
