Blazers are locking in defensively
The Portland Trail Blazers are looking to build off a 122-108 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday night. Deni Avdija led the team with 25 points, followed by Jrue Holiday with 24 points, and 22 bench points from Jerami Grant. Donovan Clingan also had a big night with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The biggest story in the NBA involving Portland pertains to the gambling-related arrest of their head coach, Chauncey Billups. For now, the team is being led by interim coach Tiago Splitter.
Through the first four games, the Blazers are only 21st in the NBA in offensive rating but have shone on the defensive end, where they rank seventh. Portland is also third in the NBA from the free-throw line, knocking down 86.2%.

The Blazers opened the season with a 118-114 home loss to Minnesota before beating the Warriors, who were on a back-to-back, 139-119. On the road, the Blazers fell to the Clippers 114-107 on Sunday, before bouncing back to beat the Lakers the next day.
Markkanen drops 51 in latest win
The Utah Jazz are coming off a 138-134 overtime win over the Phoenix Suns on Monday. Utah opened the season with a 129-108 win over the Clippers, with a 105-104 loss to the Sacramento Kings sandwiched in between.
In the win over Phoenix, Lauri Markkanen led the way with 51 points and 14 rebounds, followed by Keyonte George with 26 points and 10 assists. Walker Kessler also added 25 points and 11 rebounds. With the career-high game, Markkanen is currently fifth in the NBA, averaging 34.7 ppg. Rookie Ace Bailey is still adjusting to the NBA, averaging 2.7 points and 2.3 rebounds in just under 15 minutes per game this season.
The Jazz are also outstanding from the free-throw line, knocking down 89% of their attempts this season, good for second in the NBA. Utah is sixth in the NBA in offensive rating overall and 14th on defense.
Portland Trail Blazers vs. Utah Jazz Predictions:
Moneyline Pick vs. Trail Blazers vs. Jazz
- Utah Jazz +120 (5 units)
The Jazz have done a nice job of protecting their house so far, with a 21-point win over the Clippers to open the season and a solid win over the Suns on Monday. The Blazers will be playing their third straight road game after facing the Clippers and Lakers. I'll point out that both of Portland's wins this season came after catching their opponent on the second night of a back-to-back. With Utah on a 6-0 ATS run against the Blazers, I'll back the Jazz to get the outright win as a home dog on Wednesday.
Total Pick for Blazers vs. Jazz
- Over 232.5 (4 units)
Utah has shone on the offensive end early, and although the Blazers have been more locked in defensively, Portland is also third in pace, which should lead to plenty of possessions. These teams are a combined 5-2 to the over/under so far, and with the way overs have been cashing in the NBA, that's the only way I can look in this game.
