Portland is dealing with key injuries
Despite missing key players all season, the Trail Blazers find themselves in ninth place in the Western Conference at 2.5 games behind eighth-place Golden State. In their last game on Friday, the Raptors outclassed Portland at Moda Center by 12. Leading scorer Deni Avdija missed the game due to a back injury suffered in their previous game against Miami (127-110 win) on Thursday. Shaedon Sharpe and Jrue Holiday scored 21 points apiece to lead the Blazers, who shot just 40% from the field and 29% (13-of-45) from the three-point line.
Portland is coached by Tiago Splitter, the former NBA player who took over for Chauncey Billups early in the season. Considering all the drama and injuries, it's amazing that they are .500. Avdija, who averages 26 points per game, is expected to play in this game. Another big story is Holiday returning to Boston, where he helped win a title. He's been dealing with a calf strain and missed two months earlier in the season. They'll also be without G Scoot Henderson (hamstring) and F Kris Murray (back), while C Robert Williams (knee) is questionable.
On DunksandThrees.com, Portland is ranked 20th overall in Adjusted Net Rating, 17th in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency and 16th in Adjusted Offense.

Brown leads Celtics in the Eastern Conference
Even though Boston is in second place in the Eastern Conference and could get star forward Jayson Tatum (Achilles) back before the playoffs, they are potentially making a trade before the deadline on Feb. 5. The Celtics just played six of their last seven games on the road, winning four of seven. The C's could use a center and that's apparently what they'd like to get. Former Portland guard Anfernee Simons (13.9 ppg), could be used as part of a trade even after he just scored 21 points in their last to Chicago on Saturday.
Jaylen Brown is a big reason for the Celtics' success this season. He had 33 points in the Bulls' loss and was dealing with a hamstring issue after playing 46 minutes in a double-overtime win over Brooklyn on Friday night. Brown is averaging 29.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists, while guard Derrick White adds 17.6 points and 5.4 assists, but is shooting just 38.8% from the field (32.1% 3pt).
According to DunksandThrees.com, Boston is third in Adjusted Net Rating, first in Adjusted Offense and 17th in Adjusted Defense.
Spread Pick and Prediction for Trail Blazers vs. Celtics
Trail Blazers vs Celtics Pick and Odds
- Portland +9.5 (4 units)
Portland has been a tough out this season, especially with Avdija on the floor. They don't get blown out often and the loss to Toronto was without him. They had won four straight before that loss and covered all four. Getting Holiday back is also huge, and he gives you solid defense, 15.4 points and 7.1 assists, even if it's with a minute restriction, his presence is needed on this young team. Boston has lost two of their last four with trade rumors swirling, which is always a difficult thing for players like Simons, who is meeting his old team. Take the points with the road dog.
Over/Under Pick for Blazers vs. Celtics
- Under 223.5 (4 units)
Boston is last in pace of play, while Portland wants to push the ball. Boston has gone under in three of their last four games. Portland has gone under in six of their last nine games. They also have Holiday back in the lineup, to help a suspect defense (20th in FG% defense). Boston ranks second in the NBA in field goal defense at home and third overall. They also rank third in the NBA in points per game allowed at 110.3.
