The Trail Blazers trounced the Warriors in Splitter’s debut
The Portland Trail Blazers started their 2025-26 campaign with a 118-114 home loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves this past Wednesday. Portland had an eight-point lead with nine minutes to go in the fourth quarter, but the Trail Blazers couldn’t hold on. They finished the game with a 40.0 field-goal percentage (13-for-42 from deep), and Jerami Grant led the way with 29 points.

On Thursday morning, the FBI arrested the Trail Blazers head coach, Chauncey Billups, on suspicion of participating in illegal poker games backed by organized crime. Billups was placed on leave, and the Trail Blazers named assistant coach Tiago Splitter as an interim coach.
Last Friday, the Trail Blazers routed the Golden State Warriors 139-119 as 2.5-point home underdogs in Splitter’s debut. Portland held the Warriors to 43.8% shooting from the field and forced them into 25 turnovers. The Blazers made 53.8% of their field goals (16-for-34 from deep) while outscoring Golden State 66-30 in the paint.
Eight Blazers scored in double digits last Friday. Deni Avdija led the charge with 26 points and six assists, Jrue Holiday double-doubled with 12 points and 11 assists, and Jerami Grant added 22 points off the bench.
The Clippers bounced back from a heavy loss at Utah
The Los Angeles Clippers embarrassed themselves in their season opener. They suffered a 129-108 defeat at the Utah Jazz, playing as firm 10.5-point road favorites. The Clippers gave up a whopping 43 points in the first quarter and trailed the Jazz by as many as 37 points.
It was an awful performance on both sides of the ball. The Clippers couldn’t stop anything while shooting 44.3% from the field (14-for-45 from downtown). Ivica Zubac accounted for 19 points and seven rebounds, James Harden had 15 points and 11 assists, while Bradley Beal scored just five points in his Clippers debut.
The Clippers bounced back in style, beating the Phoenix Suns 129-102 as 10.5-point home favorites last Friday. LA shot 59.2% from the field (16-for-29 from deep) and outscored the Suns 52-34 in the paint. The Clippers gave up just 45 second-half points to their rivals.
Harden dropped 30 points on the Suns. Kawhi Leonard accounted for 27 points, five rebounds, and five assists, while Chris Paul handed out eight assists and posted three steals while going scoreless in 20 minutes on the floor.
Trail Blazers vs. Clippers Pick
Spread Pick for Trail Blazers vs. Clippers
- Los Angeles Clippers (4 units)
The Warriors struggled with fatigue last Friday. They were on the second night of a back-to-back, coming off an overtime victory to the Denver Nuggets, and the Trail Blazers took full advantage of Golden State’s situation.
Now, the Blazers are visiting the Clippers, who cruised past the Suns after that shocking performance against the Jazz. I like the Clippers in this spot. They are arguably a better defensive team than Portland, and the Clippers’ offense showed how good it can be in that 27-point victory over the Suns.
The Clippers are a deep team. They lean on James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, and Ivica Zubac, but don’t forget that guys like Brook Lopez and John Collins are coming off the bench.
Over/Under Pick for Trail Blazers vs. Clippers
- Over (4 units)
Despite that ugly display against Utah, the Clippers rank second in the league in adjusted offensive efficiency (124.7 points per 100 possessions) and fourth in true shooting percentage (64.2%). They play at the slowest pace in the NBA (95.0 possessions per 48 minutes), but I can only look at the over in this matchup.
The Trail Blazers have been rapid fast through their first two outings, posting 107.5 possessions per 48 minutes (tied for 4th in the league). They are 11th in the NBA in true shooting percentage (60.4%) and 14th in 3-point rate (.415).
The Clippers are ninth in 3-point rate (.451). The over has hit in six of their last eight meetings with the Trail Blazers.
