West meets East in this Trail Blazers vs. Raptors prediction. Portland (8-12) is starting a five-game road trip, which will include a road game against Cleveland on Wednesday in a back-to-back situation. Toronto (14-7) has lost two straight since winning nine straight. Last season, Portland swept the Raptors and has won four straight in the series. Toronto is a 5-point favorite and the total is 232. Avdija is playing like an All-Star for the young Trail Blazers

Portland is 8-12 for a reason. They are a pretty bad team, having lost six of their last eight games. However, they have some potential in the future, thanks to players like Deni Avdija, who had 31 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists in a 123-115 loss to Oklahoma City at home on Sunday. Avdjia did an imitation of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander by making 19 of 23 free throws.

The story of that game was not the fact that OKC won their 20th game. But that Portland had an odd lineup with 7-2 Donovan Clingan home with an illness with a makeshift lineup of Kris Murray and Toumani Camara playing over 35 minutes. Clingan (illness), Jrue Holiday (hamstring), and Scoot Henderson (hamstring) were all out. When you add Matisse Thublle (thumb), who has missed most of the season and Dame Lillard (Achilles), who is out for the season, the Trail Blazers' injured list could beat some teams on their own.

That brings us to the player who at least has made the competitive and that's the 6-8 Avdija, formerly of Washington, who is averaging 25.8 points, 7. 1 rebounds and 5.8 assists, while shooting 47.6% from the field and 37.8% from beyond the arc. Shaedon Sharpe (20.9ppg) and Jermai Grant (19.1ppg) are productive players, but you have to wonder which players will get dealt near the trade deadline in February.

On DunkandThrees.com, Portland is rated 18th in Net Rating, 17th in Adjusted Offense and 19th in Adjusted Defense.

Raptors hit a bump in the road

Toronto fell on Sunday to the Knicks 116-94, which was their second in a row. The bigger shocker was their loss to Charlotte, 118-111 in overtime, when they blew a 17-point first-half lead. Fatigue may have set in on Sunday after the overtime loss to Charlotte when they traveled up to Madison Square Garden and put up 94 points. Imanuel Quickley led the Raptors with 19 points and eight assists, while Scottie Barnes added 18 points and four assists. Toronto shot just 42% from the field, 30% from long range (11-37), 53% from the line (9-17) and committed 18 turnovers.

The Raptors have six players averaging in double figures, led by Brandon Ingram (21.5ppg) and Barnes (19.9ppg, 8.5rpg, 5apg, 1.6bpg). Barnes does a little bit of everything on defense, defending bigs and wings, while shooting 51.3% from the field and 41.4% from long range.

According to DunksandThrees.com, Toronto is 15th in Net Rating, 18th in Adjusted Offense and 10th in Adjusted Defense. In terms of injuries, R.J. Barrett (knee) is the only player who is expected to miss some time.

Trail Blazers vs. Raptors Prediction and Pick

  • Toronto -5 (5 units)

With all the injuries for Portland, it's hard to believe they are just a 5-point underdog. They will bring it, but so will Toronto after two tough losses on the road. This is a deep team even without RJ Barrett. They have Barnes, an incredible all-around player and Ingram, another very long player who is tough to defend. Portland could have used Thybulle (thumb), who is expected back shortly. He was one of the better wing defenders in the league. They also miss another strong defender in Jrue Holiday. The Raptors will take advantage, especially the paint if the massive Clingan (290 pounds) misses this game due to illness.

Over/Under Pick for Portland vs. Toronto

  • Under 232.5 (5 units)

Portland ranks third in pace of play, but Toronto is at 17.  They will play more methodically at home and their length will make it more difficult for Avdjia and Sharpe to score. Portland has some guys out for a change and has gone under in three of their last four games. Toronto has gone under in five straight games.
