Raptors look like a competitive team in the East
Toronto (5-5 SU, 5-5 ATS, and 5-5 O/U) lost 130-120 to Philadelphia on Saturday. The Raptors are led by forward Brandon Ingram, who averages 21.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. They score 119.3 points per game (12th) on 48.7 percent shooting (9th), and hold their opponents to 117.1 points per game (17th) on 47.7 percent shooting (21st).

Toronto went 30-52 last season, finishing 11th in the Eastern Conference, missing the NBA playoffs. Injuries derailed the Raptors' season from the jump, as Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley were sidelined for portions of November and December. While they were just 7-26 heading into the New Year, the Dinos were much more competitive in 2025, compiling a 22-21 record over the final 43 games. Improved defensive play was the catalyst, as Toronto went from 26th in defensive rating to 2nd after the All-Star break.
To build off their second-half improvement, the Raptors must stay healthy this season. They didn't lose or add much in free agency, drafting South Carolina forward Collin Murray-Boyles ninth overall. The 20-year-old averaged 16.8 points and 8.3 rebounds as a sophomore last season, showing off two-way athleticism. Re-signing center Jakob Poeltl (14.5 PPG and 9.6 RPG in 2024-25) was also key. Toronto built depth last season, as ten players averaged 17-plus minutes per game in 50-plus outings, and the team will benefit from the return of star forward Brandon Ingram (22.2 PPG, 5.6 RPG, and 5.2 APG), who was acquired in February but didn't suit up for the Raptors. The 28-year-old veteran will boost a formidable lineup already featuring Barnes (19.3 PPG, 7.7 RPG, and 5.8 APG), Quickley (17.1 PPG and 5.8 APG), and RJ Barrett (21.1 PPG, 6.3 RPG, and 5.4 APG).

Brooklyn appears headed for the lottery again
Brooklyn (1-9 SU, 3-7 ATS, and 7-3 O/U) lost 138-94 to New York on Sunday. The Nets have been held to under 115 points in eight straight games, as they have struggled to find the bottom of the net from all over the court. They shot just 40 percent in the blowout loss to the Knicks, including 14-for-45 (31.1%) from three-point distance.
F Michael Porter Jr. paces the Nets in scoring at 23.3 points per game on 47.2 percent shooting. A few other Nets to watch on Tuesday against the Raptors are C Nic Claxton (14.6 PPG, 7.0 RPG, and 3.7 APG), F Ziaire Williams (10.0 PPG), and G Terance Mann (9.8 PPG and 3.4 APG).
Brooklyn averages 110.0 points per game (26th) and shoots 43.7 percent from the field (27th), including 33.0 percent from three (25th). The Nets' defense gives up 125.5 points per game (29th) on 52.1 percent shooting (30th), including 41.0 percent from beyond the arc (30th). They are 29th in NET rating, including 27th in offensive rating and 30th in defensive rating, per Dunks and Threes.

Raptors vs. Nets Pick and Preview
Spread Pick for Raptors vs. Nets
- Β Toronto -9.5 (5 Units)
Brooklyn relies heavily on the three-ball (third-highest 3PT attempt rate in the NBA), which isn't a sound strategy for a team that shoots just 33 percent from there. They're unlikely to fare better from long range against Toronto's perimeter defense, as the visitors have held their opponents to 32.9 percent from beyond the arc (5th). The Nets also attempt the fourth-fewest shots at the rim. Considering that they also struggle with turnovers (23rd in TO%), it's unlikely the home team will make the most of their offensive possessions.
The Raptors have made significant strides offensively since last season, and the arrival of Ingram has certainly contributed to this improvement. They were ineffective from three-point range, ranking 29th in made threes and 23rd in three-point percentage, but boast the fifth-best percentage (39.1%) this season. With more reliable outside shooting threats, the Raptors have improved court spacing, helping the on-ball scorer Barnes. They also take good care of the basketball (7th in TO%).
The Nets haven't been competitive during their losing stretch, failing to cover and losing by double digits in four of their last five games. The Raptors are 4-1 ATS in their last five games, responding to a poor start to the season. I'll back their side against the spread.
Over/Under Pick for Raptors vs. Nets
- Under 233.5 (4 Units)
Tuesday's game is projected to be somewhat below average in pace. The Raptors average the third-shortest offensive possession length, but the Nets are likely to slow them down (19th in average defensive possession length). On the other end of the court, Brooklyn plays at a slow tempo (25th in average offensive possession length), which Toronto also prefers (third-longest average defensive possession length). The home team has only scored more than 110 points twice in its last eight games, and they're without their second-leading scorer, Thomas. I don't trust their offense enough to back the over, especially given that the under is 7-3 in the last ten matchups between these familiar opponents.
