Spurs On the Rise
The San Antonio Spurs have come out of the gates strong and appear to be a major threat this season come playoff time. Superstar Victor Wembanyama is fully healthy, and his game has elevated, a big problem for the rest of the league. The Spurs have, however, lost two straight games coming in, both to their nemesis, the Golden State Warriors. On Friday night, in NBA Cup Play, the Spurs 109-108 at home. The loss dropped San Antonio to 1-1 in Cup Play. Wembanyama was tremendous, scoring 26 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, dishing 4 assists, and adding 3 blocks. The Spurs led by one point in the closing seconds before Steph Curry sank two free throws to steal the win for Golden State.
The Spurs have shown improvement at both ends of the court this season. They rank 15th in the league in scoring. The team is 10th in offensive efficiency and sixth in field goal efficiency. The Spurs are just 16th in 3-point shooting thus far. On the defensive front, the Spurs rank fifth in points allowed per game. They are seventh in defensive efficiency and eighth in opponents’ field goal efficiency. The Spurs have struggled to guard the perimeter, ranking just 27th in 3-point defense. The team is 20th in rebounding and 25th in turnovers per game.

Kings at Spurs PredictionÂ
Point Spread Pick for Kings vs. SpursÂ
- Knicks -7.5 (4 units)
This game, despite the two straight losses for San Antonio, appears to be a matchup of two teams going in opposite directions. The Spurs, particularly with guard De’Aaron Fox back from injury, have an extremely efficient offense that runs through Wembanyama. The Kings are far from efficient on offense, ranked in the bottom 10 in most offensive categories. They aren’t much better defensively, ranked just 29th in points allowed per game. The Spurs will cut off the interior, with Wembanyama manning the middle, and force the Kings to beat them with midrange shooting. The Kings won’t be up for that challenge. Expect a big bounce-back game from the Spurs after two hard-fought battles with the Warriors.
Take the Spurs minus the points.
Over/Under Pick for Kings vs. SpursÂ
- Over 237 (4 units)
The Kings’ defense has really struggled in recent weeks, including letting up a franchise-high 144 points last Sunday. They have given up 122 points or more in each of their five losses during this streak. That includes three games of 130 points or more. As noted, the Spurs are more diversified offensively with the return of Fox and should feast on the Kings’ porous defense. The Kings’ best avenue to stay close will be to try and expose the Spurs’ poor perimeter defense. Three-point shooting should be enough to help push this game past the total.
Take the over.
