The Kings are slumping big-time
The Sacramento Kings were looking to stop their six-game slide on Wednesday. It was an impossible mission, given the fact that Oklahoma City was a massive 18.5-point fave. The Kings couldn’t count on Domantas Sabonis (knee) and Keegan Murray (thumb).
According to Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee, Murray is expected to make his season debut against Memphis on Thursday. Sabonis (17.2 PPG, 12.3 RPG) will be trying to suit up on the second night of a back-to-back.
During their six-game losing streak, the Kings haven’t covered the spread once while struggling on both sides of the ball. They’ve allowed at least 122 points in each of those six contests.
Sacramento surrenders a whopping 121.5 points per 100 possessions (27th in the NBA), and in his first full season at the helm, the Kings' head coach Doug Christie is already in trouble. The Kings score just 110.3 points in return (25th) while shooting 51.9% from inside the arc (26th) and 37.2% from deep (11th).
The Grizzlies are awful, too
The Memphis Grizzlies have only won one of their last 10 games overall and are winless in five straight outings. They are coming off Tuesday’s 111-101 defeat at the San Antonio Spurs, as the Grizzlies finished a four-game road trip with a 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS record.
Memphis scored just 14 fourth-quarter points at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. The Grizzlies shot 40.4% from the field (12-for-39 from deep) while earning a paltry nine free throws on the night. Rookie Cedric Coward led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Ja Morant (17.9 PPG, 7.6 APG) sat out the Spurs game with a calf injury and will remain on the shelf for a couple of weeks. That’s a massive blow for the slumping Grizzlies team. Brandon Clarke and Scotty Pippen Jr. are on the sidelines, too. F Jaren Jackson Jr (ankle) is considered doubtful.
The Grizzlies score 109.0 points per 100 possessions (27th in the NBA) and allow 116.9 points in return (19th). They are 28th in the league in 2-point percentage (50.5%) and 27th in 3-point percentage (32.8%).
Kings vs. Grizzlies Pick
Spread Pick for Kings vs. Grizzlies
- Sacramento Kings +2.5 (4 units)
I like the Kings in this spot even though they play without rest. The Kings decided to rest Domantas Sabonis against the mighty Thunder on the front end of a back-to-back, and Keegan Murray’s return to the lineup should be a huge boost for Sacramento on both sides of the ball.
The Grizzlies are without their best player and now Jackson might not play in this one. Their offense has been awful even with Ja Morant on the court, so I’m backing the Kings to cover. I think Sacramento has more offensive firepower than Memphis at the moment.
Over/Under Pick for Kings vs. Grizzlies
- Over 234.5 (4 units)
Both Sacramento and Memphis love to play fast. The Kings are fifth in the league in pace (102.4 possessions per 48 minutes), and the Grizzlies rank eighth in this category (102.0). They’ve struggled on offense thus far, especially Memphis, but don’t forget that both teams have struggled to defend, too.
At least, these two teams take good care of the ball. They are tied for the 10th-best turnover percentage in the NBA. I expect them to push the ball in transition whenever they can while looking to take full advantage of each other’s defensive flaws. Give me the over.
