The Kings hope to return to the playoffs
The Sacramento Kings snapped their 16-season playoff drought in 2023. After a tough defeat in the 2024 Play-In Tournament Final, the Kings had high hopes for the 2024-25 season, but their campaign ended in the Play-In Tournament once more, as the Kings lost to the Dallas Mavericks 120-106.

Last season, the Kings fired head coach Mike Brown after just two months, and Doug Christie led the team for the rest of the year, going 27-24 in the process. The Kings finished ninth in the Western Conference with a 40-42 record. They were seventh in the league in adjusted offensive efficiency (116.7 points per 100 possessions) and 23rd in adjusted defensive efficiency (116.2).
In the offseason, the Kings signed a couple of veteran point guards in Dennis Schroder and Russell Westbrook, along with power forward Drew Eubanks. Sacramento lost guard Jake LaRavia and power forward Trey Lyles, which shouldn’t hurt their playoff chances.
The core remains the same. Sacramento will continue to lean on Zach LaVine (22.4 PPG in 2024-25), DeMar DeRozan (22.2 PPG, 4.4 APG), Domantas Sabonis (19.1 PPG, 13.9 RPG, 6.0 APG), and Malik Monk (17.2 PPG, 5.6 APG). Keegan Murray (12.4 PPG, 6.7 RPG) and Sabonis won’t play against the Suns due to injuries, while Schroder is listed as questionable.
The Suns start a new era
Last season, the Phoenix Suns were one of the biggest disappointments. They went 36-46 and missed the postseason, finishing 11th in the Western Conference. The Suns ranked 10th in the NBA in adjusted offensive efficiency (116.2) and 28th in adjusted defensive efficiency.
Phoenix fired Mike Budenholzer at the end of the 2024-25 season and hired Jordan Ott, who’s the Suns’ fourth head coach in as many seasons. This is Ott’s first gig, as he spent the last seven seasons as an assistant coach with the Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
The Suns made significant moves in the offseason. They traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets, getting Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, and six draft picks in return. The Suns waived Bradley Beal, and they’ll owe him a ton of money in the next five years. Moreover, the Suns lost Tyus Jones in free agency, and the 29-year-old point guard was posting 10.2 points and 5.3 assists per game last season.
At least, Phoenix extended Devin Booker, who will continue to lead the way for the Suns. The four-time All-Star started 75 games last season, averaging 25.6 points and 7.1 assists. Booker and Green (21.0 PPG, 4.6 RPG) make a dynamic backcourt duo, but Green will miss Wednesday’s clash against the Kings with a hamstring injury.
Kings vs. Suns Pick
Spread Pick for Kings vs. Suns
- Sacramento Kings +3.5 (5 units)
In his playing days, Doug Christie was known for his defense. Christie stated that he wants his team to play tough, aggressive defense, but the Kings’ roster is not exactly full of defensive stoppers. The Suns’ defense was horrendous in 2024-25, so we should see a tight battle in Phoenix on Wednesday night.
Hereof, I’m going with the underdogs. It seems like the Kings have more offensive weapons than the rebuilding Suns, who will miss Jalen Green a lot. Domantas Sabonis’ absence is a big blow for the Kings, but they should be able to control the glass against the Suns, who were one of the worst rebounding teams in the NBA in 2024-25.
Over/Under Pick for Kings vs. Suns
- Over 227.5 (5 units)
Under Jordan Ott, I expect the Suns to play faster than they did under Mike Budenholzer. The Suns will continue to lean on 3-pointers (9th in the league in 3-point rate last season), whereas the Kings will look to attack the rim as much as possible.
I don’t trust these two teams to defend at a high level, so I can only look at the over. The Kings will push the ball in transition whenever they can, and the Suns’ perimeter defense and rim protection will continue to struggle.
