No Wembanyama, no problem
The San Antonio Spurs have shown a true “next man up” mentality all season. They opened the year without De’Aaron Fox, and now that he’s back, they’ve been playing without Stephon Castle since November 17th and without Victor Wembanyama, who last played on November 14th. Rookie Dylan Harper also missed 10 games earlier this year but has recently returned. Wembanyama is still the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, while Castle ranks third in scoring.
Devin Vassell led the way with 35 points in the win over Denver, while Julian Champagnie added 25 points and 10 boards. Fox chipped in 15 points and a team-high 12 assists. The Spurs’ came through big at the free-throw line, going 30-for-32 on free throws (94%).
San Antonio has been one of the most balanced teams in the league, ranking inside the top five in offensive efficiency, defensive efficiency, true shooting percentage, and rebounding rate. With a long season still ahead, the Spurs sit fourth in the Western Conference, just one game behind the Lakers for second.
Key Injuries for Spurs:
- G Stephon Castle (hip) is out.
- F Victor Wembanyama (calf) is out.
Wolves looking to stop sliding
The Minnesota Timberwolves come in eighth in the NBA in field-goal percentage but only 17th in rebounding rate. They also rank 10th in both offensive and defensive efficiency. Entering Saturday’s matchup with Boston, Minnesota was riding a three-game losing streak after a tough 114–113 loss to Phoenix, a 117–112 defeat at Sacramento, and a 113–105 loss to Oklahoma City. They’ll hope a return to their home floor sparks a turnaround, as they are 5–3 at home this season.
In the Western Conference standings, Minnesota sits seventh, one game back of the Phoenix Suns for sixth. The Timberwolves are led by Anthony Edwards, who ranks 12th in the NBA at 28 points per game, and he’s averaged 38.3 per game during their current three-game skid.
Key injuries for Timberwolves:
none.
San Antonio Spurs at Minnesota Timberwolves Predictions
Spurs vs Timberwolves ATS Pick:
-
Spurs -3.5 (4 units)
Even without Castle and Wembanyama, the Spurs continue finding ways to win with a total team effort. They’re better than Minnesota on both ends of the floor, and they hold a significant advantage on the glass. With Minnesota coming off a difficult game against Boston on Saturday, fatigue could also play a major role late against this deep and hungry young Spurs team. With San Antonio on a three-game head-to-head losing streak against the Wolves, expect a locked-in performance here. Take San Antonio.
Spurs vs Timberwolves Total Pick:
-
Under 231.5 (5 units)
Minnesota ranks fourth in pace, but on the second night of a back-to-back, their legs may not allow them to run as much. The Spurs will welcome a slower tempo, as they sit 26th in the league in pace.
Both teams have found themselves in lower-scoring games lately, as five of San Antonio’s last seven games have stayed under the total, and Minnesota has gone under in eight straight games.
