Are the Spurs the team to beat in the West?
When San Antonio beat Oklahoma City in the NBA Cup by 20 and on Christmas Day by 15, the question had to be asked. Are the Spurs ready to push the Thunder for Western Conference supremacy? Since then, the Spurs have won just three of their last seven games, having lost three of their last four games at home, falling to Utah, Cleveland, and Portland, while beating the Knicks by two. In their last game, after losing two straight to Portland and Memphis, they destroyed the Lakers, who were playing without LeBron James and Austin Reaves. Keldon Johnson led the Spurs with 27 points, while Victor Wembanyama added 16 points and 14 rebounds with four blocks off the bench.
Wembanyama (knee bruise is his latest) has dealt with several injuries this season, so the Spurs are being cautious with him, bringing him off the bench lately in a limited capacity in terms of minutes. It's the right thing to do for a team that is 4.5 games behind the Thunder for first place in the West, but ultimately, keeping the 22-year-old healthy for the postseason is crucial. He's leading the Spurs with 24.2 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, while point guard D'Aaron Fox adds 21 points and 5.9 assists.
San Antonio is also starting to resemble the Thunder in terms of depth, so they can survive losing "Wemby" for a bit and guard Devin Vassell (15 PPG), who is out for this game due to an adductor strain. DunksandThrees.com has the Spurs as the 7th-ranked team in Adjusted Net Rating, 6th in Adjusted Offense and 9th in Adjusted Defense.
Boston was on a roll before Denver loss
Boston came into Friday's game against Toronto winning four of five games and eight of 10. A home loss at Denver on Jan. 7, 114-110 as a 9.5-point favorite was a shocking one, considering the Nuggets had no Nikola Jokic due to injury. But Boston, who might be an unlikely contender in the East without Jayson Tatum (Achilles) bounced back to beat the Raptors on Friday by eight as a 9.5-point favorite.
Jaylen Brown (25 PPG, 8 RPG, 7 APG) should be an MVP candidate for his outstanding first half had some help led by Payton Pritchard, who had 27 points and eight assists on 12 of 19 shooting. Pritchard, who was a role player before this season, has become an outstanding starter, who has stepped up his game in 2025-26 with 16.9 points and 5.2 assists on 44.5% shooting (33.5% 3pt).
The C's defense has kept them competitive as they rank third in the NBA in field goal defense (45%), but they rank 25th against the three-point shot (37.2%). On DunksandThrees.com, Boston ranks 3rd in Adjusted Net Rating, second in Adjusted Offense and 16th in Adjusted Defense.
Spread Pick for Spurs vs. Celtics
Spurs vs. Celtics Prediction, Odds and Pick
- Spurs -1 (5 units)
Brown played over 36 minutes last night and Derrick White (18 pts) played 38. It's a team with depth, but not as like the Spurs and they have limited size other than Neemias Queta, who has to keep up with 7-5 Wembanyama and 7-1 Frank Kornet, a former Celtics role player, who his averaging 6.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks starting at the moment. The Spurs are just so balanced and they have players like Keldon Johnson, who could star in most players, averaging 15 points, while shooting 42.1% from three-point range. Boston depends mainly on White, Brown and Pritchard for production, while the Spurs have a cavalcade of players even with Vassell out. Rookie Dylan Harper is averaging 11 points off the bench in just 21 minutes per game. It's almost not fair to have that much depth.
Over/Under Pick for Spurs vs. Celtics
- Under 229.5 (4 units)
Boston wants to slow this game down after playing the night before, but they would do the same thing had they not played on Friday because they rank 30th in pace of play. Pritchard scored a lot of his points inside the arc on Friday, but with Wemby patrolling the paint at least half the time, that will be a near-impossible task. The Spurs have gone under in four straight and seven of eight. Boston has gone under in seven of their last 10 games.
