San Antonio Sits in Second
The San Antonio Spurs suffered through a long rebuild while accumulating draft assets, but it seems to finally have paid off. It certainly helped that they won the lottery in the Victor Wembanyama draft, but the Spurs have also done a nice job of filling out the roster around him to create a competitor in the West. The Spurs are now in second place in the Western Conference, five games behind the conference leading Thunder, but just a game ahead of the Nuggets in third.
The Spurs are coming off a strong win over the Rockets, in which San Antonio was led by Wembanyama with 28 points and 16 rebounds. Wemby is in line for some postseason awards, if he can stay healthy, as he is already nearing the cutoff for missed games in terms of receiving postseason recognition. The big man is averaging 24.3 PPG and 11.2 RPG while leading the league with 2.7 blocks per game. De'Aaron Fox is their other top scorer, the point guard is scoring 20.2 PPG while dishing out 6.0 APG.
San Antonio is relatively healthy, expect for for injury to Jeremy Sochan who will not be available for this game. This means they will still have three quality wing scorers in Stephon Castle (16.6 PPG), Devin Vassell (14.6 PPG) and Keldon Johnson (13.6 PPG). The Spurs are ranked 7th in both offensive and defensive efficiency according to dunksandthrees.com. San Antonio ranks 19th in the league in possessions per game.

Hornets Heat Up
The Charlotte Hornets are quite possibly the hottest team in the NBA, as they have won five straight games coming into this matchup with the Spurs. Charlotte has a young roster which is starting to gel, as they hope to make a run to get themselves back into playoff position before the All-Star Break. Their recent wins included victories over the Magic, Wizards, 76ers, Grizzlies and Mavericks. In their last win, Charlotte was led by Kon Knueppel with 34 points including eight threes in the win over Dallas.
Knueppel got the last laugh in their most recent game, as he was taking on his former college teammate Cooper Flagg in a showdown of potential Rookie of the Year finalists. Flagg scored 49, but Knueppel got 34 in the win, and is averaging 18.9 PPG and 5.4 RPG while knocking down 3.4 threes per game. Their top scorer is Brandon Miller, he is getting 20.6 PPG to go with his 4.5 RPG as a 6'7 forward. LaMelo Ball runs the point, he leads the team with 7.6 APG and is scoring 19.1 PPG. Ball is tied with Knueppel, as they are both making 3.4 threes per night.
Miles Bridges is their fourth top scorer, he is scoring 18.5 PPG and Collin Sexton comes off the bench to lead the second unit with 14.3 PPG. The Hornets are 5th in offensive efficiency and 22nd in defensive efficiency. They play at a similar pace as the Spurs, as they rank 21st in the league in possessions per game.

Spurs vs. Hornets Picks and Predictions
Spread pick for Spurs vs. Hornets
- Spurs -4.5 (5 units)
In the small time this line has been available, it has already climbed from the Spurs -3.5 to now 4.5. The money piled in on San Antonio early, as the sharps are not believing in this recent run from the Hornets. There are athletes all over the floor, but the most important mismatch is inside, where Charlotte has no one to go up against Wemby. The Hornets are without Plumlee, which would have been one of their best frontline options in this game. Miles Bridges is an undersized four, and Moussa Diabate has no chance of staying with Wemby inside or out. San Antonio is the second best team in the West, and has plenty of guards to hang with these Hornets. Fox will be able to chase Ball all over the floor, and Castle will slow down Knueppel. Take the Spurs.
Take the Spurs to win and cover.
Over/Under Pick for Spurs vs. Hornets
- Under 226.5 (4 units)
If anyone has been paying attention to the trends, they would have been betting San Antonio overs every night for the past three weeks. The Spurs have gone under in 13 of their last 14 games, an incredible run of unders as bettors keep foolishly betting the over. The unders make sense, Wemby is the best defender in the game, and the Spurs only rank 21st in the league in pace of play. San Antonio will play slowly here, as Charlotte has no one who can stop Wemby in the half court. Charlotte has shooters, but is only 19th in pace of play, and has gone under in five of their last seven.
Take the under.
