The Spurs have some injury worries
The San Antonio Spurs visited the Boston Celtics on Saturday night to start their three-game road trip. Last Wednesday, the Spurs beat the Los Angeles Lakers 107-91, snapping their two-game skid. After a 115-110 defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers and a 106-105 loss at the Memphis Grizzlies, the Spurs dominated the Lakers despite going 4-for-25 from downtown.
The Spurs outscored the Lakers 66-40 in the paint while holding their rivals to 39.5% shooting from the field (9-for-39 from deep). Keldon Johnson led the way for San Antonio with 27 points, while Victor Wembanyama double-doubled with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Interestingly, Wembanyama came off the bench and played just 26 minutes.
Wembanyama (24.2 PPG, 11.5 RPG) has appeared in 23 games this season while struggling with injuries. Julian Champagnie (11.1 PPG, 5.9 RPG) was questionable for Saturday’s clash against Boston, and Devin Vassell (15.0 PPG) was out with a left adductor strain. Vassell will probably remain on the shelf for a few more games.
The Timberwolves have injury worries, too
The Minnesota Timberwolves visited the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon, searching for their fifth straight victory. In their previous four outings, the Timberwolves have recorded a couple of road wins over the Miami Heat 125-115 and the Washington Wizards 141-115, along with a pair of home wins against the Heat 122-94 and the Cavaliers 131-122.
Last Thursday, the Timberwolves outscored the Cavaliers 43-22 in the third quarter. Minnesota shot 57.3% from the field (20-for-38 from deep) while missing eight of its 17 shots from the foul line. Julius Randle posted a line of 28 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists, Anthony Edwards had 28 points and nine dishes, and Jaden McDaniels added 26 points.
Both Edwards (29.2 PPG, 5.1 RPG) and Randle (22.3 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 5.8 APG) were listed as questionable for Saturday’s game against Cleveland, but they eventually suited up. Mike Conley (4.9 PPG, 3.0 APG) was out for rest purposes, so he should be ready to play against San Antonio.
Spurs vs. Timberwolves Pick
Spread Pick for Spurs vs. Timberwolves
- San Antonio Spurs (4 units)
Keep tracking the injury report because it’s the second day of a back-to-back for both teams. The Timberwolves could decide to rest Anthony Edwards or Julius Randle after listing them as questionable for the Cavaliers game. Edwards is nursing a foot injury, while Randle is struggling with a thumb injury.
Edwards tortured the Spurs for 32 points and six assists in their first meeting of the season, while Randle had 22 points and 12 assists. However, the Spurs missed both Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle (17.7 PPG, 6.9 APG). I think the Spurs will make this game interesting to watch down the stretch.
On paper, these two teams match up against each other very well. The Spurs score 118.1 points per 100 possessions (7th in the NBA) and allow 112.5 points in return (4th), while the Timberwolves score 118.3 points per 100 possessions (6th) and surrender 112.7 points in return (5th).
Over/Under Pick for Spurs vs. Timberwolves
- Under (4 units)
San Antonio and Minnesota record 100.5 possessions per 48 minutes each (tied for 12th in the NBA). But on the second night of a back-to-back set, there will be some tired legs.
Both teams are capable of playing tough defense, so I will take the under. Minnesota is fifth in the league in opposing 2-point percentage (52.6%), and San Antonio is right behind (53.2%).
The Spurs have a lot of depth, and I’m not sure that I can say the same about the Timberwolves. If Anthony Edwards or Julius Randle hit the sidelines, the T-Wolves will be in trouble.
