Spurs ran out of gas against the Timberwolves
The Spurs are coming off a 125–112 road loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday. San Antonio held a 93–89 lead entering the fourth quarter, but was outscored 36–19 the rest of the way. De’Aaron Fox led the team with 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson each added 22 points. Johnson also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Despite the loss, San Antonio remains one of the most balanced teams in the league. The Spurs rank inside the top five in offensive efficiency, defensive efficiency, true shooting percentage, and rebounding rate, and they currently sit fifth in the Western Conference with plenty of season left to play.
San Antonio has embodied a true “next man up” mentality all season. They opened the year without De’Aaron Fox, and although he has returned, the team has recently been without Stephon Castle since November 17 and Victor Wembanyama since November 14. Rookie Dylan Harper also missed 10 games earlier this season but is now back in the rotation. Despite the injuries, Wembanyama still leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, while Castle ranks third in scoring.
Key Injuries for Spurs:
- G Stephon Castle (hip) is out.
- F Victor Wembanyama (calf) is out.
Magic on a three-game winning streak
After a slow and underwhelming start, the Orlando Magic have caught fire, winning nine of their last 11 games—including their last three. Following a blowout victory over the 76ers before Thanksgiving, the Magic have won two nail-biters, edging the Pistons 112–109 last Friday and the Bulls 125–120 on Monday.
In the win over Chicago, Desmond Bane led the way with his second consecutive 37-point performance. Franz Wagner added 25 points, and Anthony Black delivered 22 points and a team-high nine rebounds off the bench. Bane has played in all 21 games this season and is averaging 19.2 points per game. The Magic remain without Paolo Banchero (21.7 ppg, 8.7 rpg), who has now missed nine straight games. Franz Wagner leads the team in scoring at 22.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Defensively, Orlando has been strong, entering this matchup tied for sixth in defensive efficiency.
Key Injuries for Orlando:
- F Paolo Banchero (groin) is out.
San Antonio Spurs at Orlando Magic Predictions
Spurs vs Magic ATS Pick:
-
Magic -8 (4 units)
The Magic have won the last four head-to-head meetings against the Spurs, and although this is their first matchup of the season against each other, I can’t fade Orlando here. San Antonio will be traveling after a tough game on Tuesday against a Memphis team that has been playing much better lately. We also saw the Spurs fade in the fourth quarter of their recent loss to Minnesota, and I expect them to run out of steam again in this spot. Orlando will not cheat the game and will come to play. Back the Magic.
Spurs vs Magic Total Pick:
-
-
Over 235 (4 units)
-
As solid as the San Antonio Spurs are defensively, they’ve still allowed at least 125 points in three of their last five games. On the other side, the Orlando Magic have been on an offensive roll, scoring 125-plus in four of their last five. Given the recent form of both teams, I expect Orlando to deliver another strong outing at home, especially with the Spurs' legs likely a little tired.
Although the Spurs are one of the slower-paced playing teams in the NBA, with a big offensive night from the Magic expected, San Antonio will do what it can to keep pace and pick up the tempo.
Despite both teams’ defensive strengths, they’ve each been stronger to the over this season.
Take the over.
