The Spurs eye their fourth straight W
Since back-to-back home losses against the Golden State Warriors, 125-120 and 109-108, the San Antonio Spurs (11-4; 8-7 ATS; 8-7 O/U) have won three straight home contests despite missing Victor Wembanyama (26.2 PPG, 12.9 RPG) due to a calf injury.
During that stretch, the Spurs have beaten the Sacramento Kings 123-110, the Memphis Grizzlies 111-101, and the Atlanta Hawks 135-126. De’Aaron Fox has accounted for at least 26 points in each of those three games.
Last Thursday, Fox tortured the Hawks for 26 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and three steals. The Spurs allowed a staggering 20 3-pointers, but they outscored Atlanta 60-46 in the paint and forced the Hawks into 16 turnovers.
The Spurs score 119.1 points per 100 possessions (6th in the NBA) and allow 112.1 points in return (tied for 5th). They are second in the league in 2-point percentage (59.5%) and 13th in 3-point percentage (36.6%).
Key Injury Report for Spurs:
- G Dylan Harper (calf) is out.
- G Stephon Castle (hip) is out 1-2 weeks.
- F Victor Wembanyama (calf) is out 2-3 weeks.
The Suns shoot for their third straight W
The Phoenix Suns (10-6; 11-5 ATS; 8-8 O/U) continue to impress. They’ve only lost one of their previous eight games overall while going 7-1 against the number. The Suns’ defense has improved a lot over the last couple of weeks, and their offense looks good despite missing Jalen Green (15.5 PPG) and Grayson Allen (18.5 PPG).
Devin Booker leads the way for the Suns with 27.1 points and 7.1 assists per game. Dillon Brooks averages 21.0 points in his first year with the Suns, while Mark Williams posts 12.2 points and 8.2 rebounds a night.
Last Friday, the Suns outlasted the Minnesota Timberwolves 114-113 as 4.5-point home underdogs. Collin Gillespie made a jumper with 6.4 seconds remaining to lift his team over Minnesota. He finished the game with 20 points, while Brooks had 22 points and five boards.
The Suns score 118.7 points per 100 possessions (8th in the NBA) and surrender 113.7 points in return (tied for 12th). They are 14th in the league in 2-point percentage (54.8%) and fourth in 3-point percentage (38.4%).
Key Injury Report for Suns:
- G Grayson Allen (quad) is out.
- F Ryan Dunn (wrist) is questionable.
Spurs vs. Suns Pick
Spread Pick for Spurs vs. Suns
- Phoenix Suns (4 units)
The Spurs are third in the NBA in defensive rebound percentage (77.1%), but with Victor Wembanyama on the shelf, regression is inevitable. Stephon Castle (17.3 PPG, 7.5 APG) is injured, too, while Dylan Harper (14.0 PPG) missed nine straight games with a calf injury and is doubtful for Sunday’s game against Phoenix.
The Suns love to crush the offensive glass. They are fourth in the NBA in offensive rebound percentage (30.9%). Their defense is one of the most pleasant surprises of the season after a horrible 2024-25 campaign.
I like the Suns in this spot. They already beat the Spurs with Wembanyama and Castle both in the lineup. The Spurs made just 10 of their 41 shots from deep at Mortgage Matchup Center three weeks ago. The Suns are sixth in the league in opposing 3-point percentage (33.8%), whereas San Antonio ranks 29th in this category (39.4%).
Over/Under Pick for Spurs vs. Suns
- Over (4 units)
Both teams are in the bottom third of the league when it comes to pace. But they lean on 3-pointers a lot, especially the Suns. Phoenix went 19-for-33 from downtown in its previous encounter with San Antonio.
Without Wembanyama, the Spurs are not the same team. Yes, they’ve won three straight contests without their best player, but the Spurs’ interior defense misses Wemby a lot. Should their 3-point defense continue to struggle, the Suns will have a field day. Give me the over.
