New-look Suns team taking the court this season

Phoenix (1-2 SU, 0-2-1 ATS, and 3-0 O/U) has dropped consecutive games since winning its season opener against Sacramento. The Suns lost by 20-plus points in both games, giving up 129 points to the Los Angeles Clippers and 133 points to Denver. The losses came in a back-to-back, but the poor performances are hard to overlook this early in the season. The Suns trailed by 20 early in the third quarter against the Nuggets, who shot 51 percent from the field and bullied their way to the free-throw line all game (38-for-42 FT shooting). Phoenix also gave up 62 points in the paint and 28 points off turnovers.

The Suns were 36-46 last season, finishing 11th in the West and missing the playoffs. They had plenty of star power with Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal, but that group was rarely on the court at the same time (23 starts together). Phoenix was especially weak defensively, ranking 27th in defensive rating, per Dunks and Threes. A Play-In tourney berth was still up for grabs late in the season, but the team went 1-9 in their final ten games, prompting the dismissal of head coach Mike Budenholzer.

Phoenix made numerous changes this offseason, most notably waiving Beal and trading Durant to Houston. In total, eight players were allowed to leave. The Suns acquired Rockets starters Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks for KD, along with the tenth pick in the draft, which they used to select Duke center Khaman Maluach. They also acquired Charlotte center Mark Williams, who will slot into the starting lineup this season. The net result is a squad that's bigger, younger, more athletic, and stronger defensively. Still, the competition in the West is fierce and the Suns' schedule is unforgiving, making a deep run in the postseason unlikely for Phoenix.

Phoenix Suns Basketball Injury Report:Β SG Jalen Green (hamstring) and G Dillon Brooks (groin) are questionable to play against the Jazz.

Utah is still in rebuild mode

Utah (1-1 SU, 2-0 ATS, and 1-1 O/U) beat the Clippers 129-108 in its season opener and lost 105-104 to Sacramento on Friday. The Jazz dominated Los Angeles with a strong shooting performance (55.2% FG%), scoring 58 points in the paint and hitting 17 three-pointers. They led by as many as 37 points and never trailed. The close loss to the Kings was much more competitive, as neither team led by double digits. Utah dominated on the boards, with a 50-33 rebounding advantage, but was off the mark from three-point range (13-for-41) and committed 20 turnovers.

The Jazz went 17-46 last season, finishing 15th in the Western Conference and failing to make the postseason field for the third straight season. It has been a disappointing stretch for fans, as the franchise appeared to be on the come-up just a few years ago with Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert leading the team. Utah had three 50-plus win seasons from 2016 to 2021, but never advanced further than the conference semis. The stars from that team are elsewhere, replaced with new homegrown players tasked with rebuilding in the loaded West.

While they're unlikely to be much more competitive this season, the Jazz feature several new faces. Jordan Clarkson (waived), John Collins (trade), and Collin Sexton (trade) are gone, and Jusuf Nurkić (trade), Kyle Anderson (trade), Kevin Love (trade), and Georges Niang (trade) are in. The new veterans will support the core, which is headlined by All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen, who averaged 19.0 points and 5.9 rebounds in 47 games last season. The rest of the group is young, but talented, featuring nine former first-round draft picks. The most recent of that bunch is Rutgers forward Ace Bailey (fifth overall pick), a consensus top-five recruit in the 2024 high school class.

Utah Jazz Basketball Injury Report: No new injuries to report for Monday's game against the Suns.

Suns vs. Jazz Pick and Preview

Spread Pick for Suns vs. Jazz

  • Jazz cover spread (5 Units)

Phoenix didn't play well in either of its losses, while Utah has been competitive in both of its previous games. The Jazz rank top ten in effective field goal percentage, as they have been lethal inside the arc, shooting 63.6 percent (3rd). They haven't shied away from the three-ball, either, attempting the fourth-most three-pointers with a 35.3 percent mark from long range. The Suns have struggled defensively, ranking 28th in opponent eFG%, including 25th in rim defense and 25th in three-point defense. On offense, they have struggled with turnovers (27th in TO%) and haven't been able to get to the foul line (25th in FT rate).

Even with a new cast of characters, it doesn't smell like the Suns have washed off the stink of last season. Bet on the Jazz to cover the spread at home on Monday night!

Over/Under Pick for Suns vs. Jazz

  • Over (4 Units)

Phoenix has played so poorly defensively that I won't touch the under. The Jazz are slow-tempo, but if the Suns continue to struggle with turnovers and fall behind on the scoreboard early, this game could get out of hand. Phoenix hasn't shown any progress defensively, and with Williams questionable, it could be soft around the rim. The Jazz rank 9th in rim field goal percentage and 2nd in mid-range percentage. With additional fast-break opportunities via turnovers, they should put plenty of points on the board. The Jazz have also been turnover-prone (20th in TO%); plus, they rank 30th in defensive rating. The Suns will be eager to compete after dropping consecutive games as well, which should lead to plenty of back-and-forth scoring action.
